| bahūnām ṛṣivaryāṇām ācāryāṇām ca sammatam
1. O venerable one, you have explained the results arising from planets, astrological houses (bhāva), and so forth. This teaching is also affirmed by many excellent sages and preceptors.

ittham eva iti na sarve jñātvā vaktum alam narāḥ
2. Due to the intricate combination of those results and the complex interplay of planetary movements, not all people, even after knowing, are capable of definitively articulating 'it is precisely thus.'

ataḥ alpabuddhigamyam yat śāstram etat vadasi me
3. In the Kali Yuga, people are devoted to sinful acts and their intelligence is dull. Therefore, you are narrating to me this scripture, which is comprehensible even by those of limited understanding.

4. tattatkālagrahasthityā mānavānāṃ parisphuṭam .

4. Through the planetary positions at various times, [this scripture provides] for human beings a clear understanding of happiness and suffering, and also the ascertainment of longevity.

5. sādhu pṛṣṭaṃ tvayā brahman kathayāmi tavāgrataḥ .

5. sādhu pṛṣṭam tvayā brahman kathayāmi tava
agrataḥ lokeyātrāparijñānam āyuṣaḥ nirṇayam tathā
5. O Brahmana, you have indeed asked well. I will narrate to you the understanding of the worldly journey, and also the determination of longevity.

6. saṃkarasyāvirodhañca śāstrasyāpi prayojanam .

janānām upakārārtham sāvadhānamanāḥ śṛṇu
6. And the prevention of the confusion of social orders (saṃkara) is also a purpose of the scripture. Therefore, listen with an attentive mind for the welfare of the people.
7. lagnādivyayaparyantaṃ bhāvā saṃjñānurūpataḥ .

7. lagnādi vyaya paryantam bhāvāḥ saṃjñā anurūpataḥ
phaladāḥ śubha sandṛṣṭāḥ yuktāḥ vā śobhanāḥ matāḥ
7. The astrological houses (bhāvas), from the ascendant (lagna) up to the twelfth house (vyaya), yield results according to their intrinsic nature (saṃjñā). When these houses are aspected by benefic planets or conjoined with them, they are deemed auspicious.
8. te tūccādibhagaiḥ kheṭairna cāstāribhanīcagaiḥ .

8. te tu uccādibhagaiḥ kheṭaiḥ na ca astāribhanīcagaiḥ
pāpaiḥ dṛṣṭayutāḥ bhāvāḥ kalyāṇetaradāyakāḥ
8. However, when houses (bhāvas) are aspected or conjoined by planets that are exalted or otherwise strong (uccādi), and not by planets that are combust, in enemy signs, or debilitated, they yield auspicious outcomes. But if these houses are aspected or conjoined by malefic planets (pāpaiḥ), they certainly bestow inauspicious results.
9. tairaḥtāribhanīcasthairna ca mitrasvabhoccagaiḥ .

9. taiḥ astāribhanīcasthaiḥ na ca mitrasvabhoccagaiḥ
evam sāmānyataḥ proktam horāśāstrajñasūribhiḥ
9. Similarly, (inauspicious results are caused) by planets (taiḥ) that are combust, in enemy signs, or debilitated (astāribhanīcasthaiḥ), and not by those which are in friendly, own, or exalted signs (mitrasvabhoccagaiḥ). Thus, these general principles have been stated by the wise scholars (sūri) who know the science of astrology (horaśāstra).
10. mayaiyat sakalaṃ proktaṃ pūrvācāryānuvartinā .

10. maya iyat sakalam proktam pūrvācārya anuvartinā
āyuḥ ca lokayātrām ca śāstrasya asya te prayojanam
10. Whatever has been entirely declared by me, following the ancient teachers, the purpose (prayojana) of this science (śāstra) is both longevity and the course of worldly life.
11. niścetuṃ tanna saknoti vasiṣṭho vā bṛhaspatiḥ .

11. niscetum tat na saknoti vasiṣṭhaḥ vā bṛhaspatiḥ
kim punaḥ manujāḥ tatra viśeṣāt tu kalau yuge
11. Even sages like Vasishtha or Brihaspati cannot ascertain that (matter). What then can be said of ordinary humans, especially in the Kali Yuga?
12. sāmānyāṃśo viśeṣāṃśo jyotiḥśāstraṃ dvidhoditam .
proktaḥ sāmānyabhāgastu niścayāṃśastu kathyate.
12. sāmānyāṃśaḥ viśeṣāṃśaḥ jyotiḥśāstram dvidhā uditam
proktaḥ sāmānyabhāgaḥ tu niścayāṃśaḥ tu kathyate
12. The science of astrology (jyotiḥśāstra) is declared to be of two kinds: the general part and the specific part. The general division has been taught (before), and now the definitive part is being described.

13. yathā lagnāt ca candrāt ca grahāṇām bhāvajam phalam
tathā anyebhyaḥ api kheṭebhyaḥ vicintyam daivavidvaraiḥ
13. Just as the house-born results of the planets are considered from the ascendant (lagna) and the Moon, similarly, they should also be thoughtfully considered by the best astrologers from other planets (as reference points).

14. ataḥ ravyādikheṭānām salagnānām pṛthak pṛthak
aṣṭānām sarvabhāvottham yathoktam aśubham śubham
14. Therefore, the auspicious and inauspicious results arising from all houses for the eight entities – the planets beginning with the Sun, along with the ascendant (lagna) – should be described individually, as stated (in the scriptures).

15. After initially understanding the method and position, which are indicated by dots and lines, one should then declare the clear results of the Aṣṭakavarga system in the proper sequence.
