O revered sage (Muni), I now wish to hear from you about the auspicious "argalā" (planetary obstruction/support) that you have described, including its characteristics and effects.
मैत्रेय सार्गला नाम यया भावफलं दृढम् ।
स्थिरं खेटफलं च स्यात् साऽधुना कथ्यते मया ॥२॥

O Maitreya, I will now explain that which is called "sārgalā" (with argalā), by which the results of the astrological houses become firm and the results indicated by planets become stable.
चतुर्थे च धने लाभे ग्रहे ज्ञेया तदर्गला ।
तद्बाधकाः क्रमात् खेटा व्योमरिष्फतृतीयगाः ॥३॥

3. caturthe ca dhane lābhe grahe jñeyā tadargalā .

The "argalā" (planetary obstruction/support) for a planet (graha) is known to be formed by planets in the fourth, second, and eleventh houses from it. In corresponding order, the obstructors of this "argalā" are planets situated in the tenth, twelfth, and third houses [from the reference planet].
निर्बला न्यूनसंख्या वा बाधका नैव सम्मताः ।
तृतीये व्याधिकाः पापा यत्र मैत्रेय बाधकाः ॥४॥

4. nirbalā nyūnasaṃkhyā vā bādhakā naiva sammatāḥ .

Weak or few in number, obstructors (bādhakāḥ) are indeed not considered [effective]. O Maitreya, where malefic planets (pāpāḥ) in the third house act as obstructors, they are particularly troublesome (vyādhikāḥ).
तत्रापि चार्गला ज्ञेया विपरीता द्विजोत्तम ।
तथापि खेटभावानां फलमर्गलितं विदुः ॥५॥
तथापि खेटभावानां फलमर्गलितं विदुः ॥५॥
5. tatrāpi cārgalā jñeyā viparītā dvijottama .

Even in that case, O best among the twice-born (dvijottama), the "argalā" should be known as reversed (viprīta argalā). Nevertheless, experts understand the results of planets and houses to be influenced (argalitam) by "argalā".
पञ्चमं चार्गलास्थानं नवमं तद्विरोधकृत् ।
तमोग्रहभवा सा च व्यत्ययाज् ज्ञायते द्विज ॥६॥
तमोग्रहभवा सा च व्यत्ययाज् ज्ञायते द्विज ॥६॥
6. pañcamaṃ cārgalāsthānaṃ navamaṃ tadvirodhakṛt .
tamograhabhavā sā ca vyatyayāj jñāyate dvija.

O twice-born (dvija), the fifth position creates an "argala" (planetary intervention), and the ninth position creates an impediment to that. That "argala" is also understood by reversal when caused by the shadow planets (Rahu and Ketu).
एकग्रहा कनिष्ठा सा द्विग्रहा मध्यमा स्मृता ।
अर्गला द्व्यधिकोत्पन्ना मुनिभिः कथितोत्तमा ॥७॥

That (argala) which is formed by one planet is considered inferior, and that formed by two planets is considered medium. An "argala" that arises from more than two planets is declared excellent by the sages.
राशितो ग्रहतश्चापि विज्ञेया द्विविधाऽर्गला ।
निर्बाधका सुफलदा विफला च सबाधका ॥८॥

8. rāśito grahataścāpi vijñeyā dvividhā'rgalā .

The "argala" (planetary intervention) should be understood as being of two kinds: arising from the zodiac sign (rāśi) and from the planet (graha). The unobstructed "argala" yields good results, while the obstructed one is fruitless.
यत्र राशौ स्थितः खेटस्तस्य पाकान्तरं यदा ।
तस्मिन् काले फलं ज्ञेयं निर्विशंकं द्विजोत्तम ॥९॥
तस्मिन् काले फलं ज्ञेयं निर्विशंकं द्विजोत्तम ॥९॥
9. yatra rāśau sthitaḥ kheṭastasya pākāntaraṃ yadā .
tasmin kāle phalaṃ jñeyaṃ nirviśaṃkaṃ dvijottama.

O best among twice-born (dvijottama), the results of a planet (graha) should be known without doubt at the time of its maturation (pāka), in whichever zodiac sign (rāśi) it is situated.
अर्गलां प्रतिबन्धञ्च कथमांघ्रिचतुर्थयोः ।
द्वित्र्यङ्घ्रयोश्च मिथो विप्र चिन्तयेदिति मे मतम् ॥१०॥

10. argalāṃ pratibandhañca kathamāṃghricaturthayoḥ .

O Brahmin (vipra), how "argala" (planetary intervention) and its impediment (pratibandha) should be considered regarding the first and fourth houses (positions), and mutually regarding the second and third houses (positions) - this is my view.
पदे लग्ने मदे वापि निराभासार्गला यदा ।
तदा जातोऽतिविख्यातो बहुभाग्ययुतो भवेत् ॥११॥
तदा जातोऽतिविख्यातो बहुभाग्ययुतो भवेत् ॥११॥
11. pade lagne made vāpi nirābhāsārgalā yadā .
tadā jāto'tivikhyāto bahubhāgyayuto bhavet.

When there is no manifest "argala" (planetary intervention or obstruction) in the ascendant (lagna) house or the seventh house (descendant), the person born then becomes very famous and endowed with great fortune.
यस्य पापः शुभो वापि ग्रहस्तिष्ठेत् शुभार्गले ।
तेन द्रष्ट्रेक्षितं लग्नं प्राबल्यायोपकल्प्यते ॥१२॥

12. yasya pāpaḥ śubho vāpi grahastiṣṭhet śubhārgale .
tena draṣṭrekṣitaṃ lagnaṃ prābalyāyopakalpyate.

For whom (the native), if a malefic or benefic planet is situated in an auspicious "argala" (planetary intervention), then the ascendant (lagna) aspected by that planet becomes empowered.
सार्गले च धने विप्र धनधान्यसमन्वितः ।
तृतीये सोदरादीनां सुखमुक्तं मनीषिभिः ॥१३॥

13. sārgale ca dhane vipra dhanadhānyasamanvitaḥ .

And O Brahmin, if the second house (of wealth) has an "argala" (planetary intervention), the native will be endowed with wealth and grains. Regarding the third house, the wise declare happiness for siblings and relatives.
चतुर्थे सार्गले गेहपशुबन्धुकुलैर्युतः ।
पञ्चमे पुत्रपौत्रादिसंयुतो बुद्धिमान्नरः ॥१४॥

If there is an "argala" (planetary intervention) in the fourth house, the native will be endowed with a house, cattle, relatives, and family. If there is an "argala" in the fifth house, that person will be intelligent and endowed with sons, grandsons, and the like.
षष्ठे रिपुभयं कामे धनदारसुखं बहु ।
अष्टमे जायते कष्टं धर्मे भाग्योदयो भवेत् ॥१५॥

15.
If there is an "argala" (planetary intervention) in the sixth house, there will be fear from enemies. If in the seventh house (kāma), there will be much happiness from wealth and spouse. Hardship arises if it is in the eighth house. If in the ninth house (dharma), there will be a rise of fortune.
दशमे राजसम्मानं लाभे लाभसमन्वितः ।
सार्गले च व्यये विप्र व्ययाधिक्यं प्रजायते ॥१६॥

16. daśame rājasammānaṃ lābhe lābhasamanvitaḥ .

In the tenth house, one gains royal honor. In the eleventh house, one is endowed with profits. O Brahmin, if there is an argala (planetary intervention) in the twelfth house (the house of expenditure), an excess of expenses will occur.
शुभग्रहार्गलायां तु सौख्यं बहुविधं भवेत् ।
मध्यं पापार्गलायां च मिश्रायामपि चोत्तमम् ॥१७॥

17. śubhagrahārgalāyāṃ tu saukhyaṃ bahuvidhaṃ bhavet .

Indeed, when there is an argala (planetary intervention) from benefic planets, there is happiness of many kinds. When there is an argala from malefic planets, the results are moderate. And even when there is a mixed argala, the outcome is excellent.
लग्नपञ्चमभाग्येषु सार्गलेषु द्विजोत्तम ।
जातश्च जायते राजा भाग्यवान् नात्र संशयः ॥१८॥

O best among Brahmins, if there are argalas (planetary interventions) in the Ascendant, fifth, and ninth houses, the person born will become a king and be fortunate. There is no doubt about this.
