अथाऽहं देहजातानां लांछनानां फलं ब्रुवे ।
आवर्तानां तिलानां च मशकानां विशेषतः ॥१॥

1. athā'haṃ dehajātānāṃ lāṃchanānāṃ phalaṃ bruve .

Now, I will declare the results of the marks (lāñchana) that appear on the body, especially those of hair-whorls (āvarta), moles (tila), and warts (maśaka).
अङ्गनानां च वामांगे दक्षिणाङ्गे नृणां शुभम् ।
रक्ताभं तिलकाभं वा लोम्नां चक्रमथापि वा ॥२॥
रक्ताभं तिलकाभं वा लोम्नां चक्रमथापि वा ॥२॥
2. aṅganānāṃ ca vāmāṃge dakṣiṇāṅge nṛṇāṃ śubham .
raktābhaṃ tilakābhaṃ vā lomnāṃ cakramathāpi vā.

For women, these marks are auspicious on the left side of the body, and for men, they are auspicious on the right side. They can be reddish (raktābha), or mole-like (tilakābha), or even a whorl of hairs (loman).
तिलादिलांछनं स्त्रीणां हृदि सौभाग्यसूचकम् ।
यस्या दक्षिणवक्षोजे रक्ते तिलकलांछने ॥३॥

3. tilādilāṃchanaṃ strīṇāṃ hṛdi saubhāgyasūcakam .

A mark like a mole (tilādilāñchana) on the chest (hṛdi) of women indicates good fortune. If a woman has a reddish mole-like mark (tilakalāñchana) on her right breast...
सा सन्ततिततिं सूते सुखसौभाग्यसंयुताम् ।
रक्ताभं तिलकं यस्याः स्त्रिया वामे स्तने भवेत् ॥४॥

4. sā santatitatiṃ sūte sukhasaubhāgyasaṃyutām .

She bears a line of descendants endowed with happiness and good fortune. If a woman has a reddish mole (tilaka) on her left breast...
एक एव सुतस्तस्या भवतीत विदो विदुः ।
पुत्रीपुत्रयुता ज्ञेया तिलके दक्षिणे स्तने ॥५॥

The wise know that she will have only one son. However, if there is a mole (tilaka) on her right breast, she should be known as one blessed with both daughters and sons.
भ्रुवोर्मध्ये ललाटे वा लांछनं राजसूचकम् ।
कपोले मशको रक्तो नित्यं मिष्ठान्नदायकं ॥६॥

6. bhruvormadhye lalāṭe vā lāṃchanaṃ rājasūcakam .

A mark (lañchana) between the eyebrows or on the forehead signifies royalty. A red mole on the cheek indicates a person who will always enjoy sweet foods.
भगस्य दक्षिणे भागे लांछनं यदि योषितः ।
सा हि पृथ्वीपतेः पत्नी सूते वा भूपतिं सुतम् ॥७॥

7. bhagasya dakṣiṇe bhāge lāṃchanaṃ yadi yoṣitaḥ .
sā hi pṛthvīpateḥ patnī sūte vā bhūpatiṃ sutam.

If a woman has a mark (lañchana) on the right side of her genital area (bhaga), she will indeed be the wife of a king, or she will give birth to a son who becomes a king.
नासाग्रे लाञ्छने रक्तं राजपत्न्याः प्रजायते ।
कृष्णवर्णं तु यस्याः सा पुंश्चलि विधवाऽथ वा ॥८॥

8. nāsāgre lāñchane raktaṃ rājapatnyāḥ prajāyate .
kṛṣṇavarṇaṃ tu yasyāḥ sā puṃścali vidhavā'tha vā.

nāsāgre lāñchane raktam rājapatnyāḥ prajāyate

A red mark (lañchana) on the tip of the nose indicates that she will become a queen. However, if that mark is black, she will be a harlot or a widow.
नाभेरधो नृणां स्त्रीणां लाञ्छनं च शुभप्रदम् ।
कर्णे गण्डे करे वाऽपि कण्ठे वाऽप्यथ लाञ्छनं ॥९॥

9. nābheradho nṛṇāṃ strīṇāṃ lāñchanaṃ ca śubhapradam .
karṇe gaṇḍe kare vā'pi kaṇṭhe vā'pyatha lāñchanaṃ.

nābheḥ adhaḥ nṛṇām strīṇām lāñchanaṃ ca śubhapradaṃ

For both men and women, a mark (lāñchana) below the navel is considered auspicious. Similarly, a mark on the ear, cheek, hand, or neck is also beneficial.
प्राग्गर्भे पुत्रदं ज्ञेयं सुखसौभाग्यदं तथा ।
तिलादि लाञ्छनं विप्र गुल्फगेशे च दुःखदम् ॥१०॥

10. prāggarbhe putradaṃ jñeyaṃ sukhasaubhāgyadaṃ tathā .

O Brahmin (vipra), a mark (lāñchana) on the lower abdomen is known to bestow sons, as well as happiness and good fortune. However, a mole (tilādi lāñchana) on the ankle or genital region brings sorrow.
त्रिशूलाकृति चिह्न च ललाटे यदि जायते ।
नारी राजप्रिया ज्ञेया भूपतिश्च नरो भवेत् ॥११॥

11. triśūlākṛti cihna ca lalāṭe yadi jāyate .
nārī rājapriyā jñeyā bhūpatiśca naro bhavet.

If a trident-shaped mark (cihna) appears on the forehead, a woman (nārī) with such a mark is known to be a favorite of the king, and a man (nara) with it becomes a king (bhūpati).
लोम्नां प्रदक्षिणावर्तो हृदि नाभौ करे श्रुतौ ।
दक्षपृष्ठे शुभो वस्तौ वामावर्तोऽशुभप्रदः ॥१२॥

12. lomnāṃ pradakṣiṇāvarto hṛdi nābhau kare śrutau .
dakṣapṛṣṭhe śubho vastau vāmāvarto'śubhapradaḥ.

12.
A clockwise whorl of hair on the heart/chest, navel, hand, ear, or right side of the back is auspicious (śubha). However, an anti-clockwise whorl on the lower abdomen (vasti) is inauspicious (aśubhaprada).
कट्यां गुह्येऽथवाऽवर्तो स्त्रीणां दौर्भाग्यसूचकः ।
उदरे हन्ति भर्तारं मध्यपृष्ठे च पुंश्चली ॥१३॥

13. kaṭyāṃ guhye'thavā'varto strīṇāṃ daurbhāgyasūcakaḥ .

A hair-whorl on the waist or private parts of women is an indicator of misfortune. If it is on the belly, it causes the death of the husband. And if on the middle of the back, it makes the woman unchaste.
कण्ठे ललाटे सीमन्ते मध्यभागे च मूर्धनि ।
आवर्तो न शुभः स्त्रीणां पुसां वाऽपि द्विजोत्तम ॥१४॥

14. kaṇṭhe lalāṭe sīmante madhyabhāge ca mūrdhani .
āvarto na śubhaḥ strīṇāṃ pusāṃ vā'pi dvijottama.

O best among the twice-born (dvija), a hair-whorl on the neck, forehead, the parting of the hair, the middle of the head, or on the head itself is not considered auspicious for women, nor even for men.
सुलक्षणा सुचरिता अपि मन्दायुषं पतिम् ।
दीर्घायुषं प्रकुर्वन्ति प्रमदाश्च मुदास्पदम् ॥१५॥

15. sulakṣaṇā sucaritā api mandāyuṣaṃ patim .
dīrghāyuṣaṃ prakurvanti pramadāśca mudāspadam.

Women who possess auspicious bodily marks and are of good conduct make even a short-lived husband long-lived and a source of joy.
