1. athocyate mayā vipra rahasyaṃ jñānamuttamam .
jagatāmupakārāya yat proktaṃ brahmaṇa svayam.
1. atha ucyate mayā vipra rahasyam jñānam uttamam
jagatām upakārāya yat proktam brahmaṇā svayam
1. Now, O Brahmin (vipra), an excellent and secret knowledge (jñāna) is being declared by me, which was spoken by Brahmā himself for the benefit of all beings.
2. cakraṃ sudarśanaṃ nāma yadvaśāt prasphuṭaṃ phalam .
nṛṇāṃ tanvādibhāvānāṃ jñātuṃ śaknoti daivavit.
2. cakram sudarśanam nāma yat vaśāt prasphuṭam phalam
nṛṇām tanvādibhāvānām jñātum śaknoti daivavit
2. An astrologer (daivavit) can understand the clear and distinct results concerning humans, specifically regarding their natal houses (bhāvas) starting from the Ascendant (tanu), by means of the cakra (wheel) named Sudarśana.
3. janmato mṛtyuparyantaṃ varṣamāsadinodbhavam .
śubhaṃ vā'pyaśubhaṃ sarvaṃ tacchṛṇuṣvaikamānasaḥ.
3. janmataḥ mṛtyuparyantam varṣamāsadinodbhavam śubham
vā api aśubham sarvam tat śṛṇuṣva ekamānasaḥ
3. Now, listen with complete focus (ekamānasa) to all the results, whether auspicious or inauspicious, that manifest over years, months, and days, spanning from birth until death.
4. ekakendrodbhavaṃ ramyaṃ likhed vṛttatrayaṃ dvija .
dvādaśāraṃ ca tat kuryād bhavedevaṃ sudarśanam.
4. ekakendrodbhavam ramyam likhet vṛttatrayam dvija
dvādaśāram ca tat kuryāt bhavet evam sudarśanam
4. O twice-born (dvija), one should draw three beautiful circles originating from a single center. And one should make that (diagram) with twelve spokes; in this way, it becomes the Sudarśana (cakra).
5. tatrādyavṛtte lagnādyā bhāvā lekhyāḥ sakhecarāḥ .
tadūrdhvavṛtte candrācca bhavāḥ kheṭasamanvitāḥ.
5. tatra ādyavṛtte lagnādyāḥ bhāvāḥ lekhyāḥ sakhecarāḥ
tat ūrdhvavṛtte candrāt ca bhavāḥ kheṭasamannitāḥ
5. Therein, in the innermost circle (ādya-vṛtta), the astrological houses (bhāvas) beginning with the Ascendant (lagna) should be inscribed along with their respective planets. And in the circle above that (tadūrdhavṛtta), the houses originating from the Moon should be written, also accompanied by their planets.
6. tadūrdhvavṛtte sūryācca kramāt bhavā grahānvitāḥ .
evamekaikabhāve'tra bhavedbhānāṃ trayaṃ trayam.
6. tadūrdhvavṛtte sūryāt ca kramāt bhavāḥ grahānvitāḥ
| evam ekaikabhāve atra bhavet bhānām trayam trayam
6. In the subsequent zodiacal circle, the houses (bhāvas) associated with planets are determined successively from the Sun's position. Thus, for each individual house (bhāva) here, there will be three divisions (bhānas) each.
7. atra tu prathamo bhāvo lagnenduravibhiryutaḥ .
taṃ prakalpya tanuṃ tvagre jñeyā bhāvā dhanādayaḥ.
7. atra tu prathamaḥ bhāvaḥ lagnenduravibhiḥ yutaḥ |
tam prakalpya tanum tu agre jñeyāḥ bhāvāḥ dhanādayaḥ
7. Here, the first house (bhāva) is understood to be associated with the Ascendant (lagna), the Moon (indu), and the Sun (ravi). Establishing that (first house) as the Ascendant (tanu), the subsequent houses (bhāvas) like wealth (dhana) and others should then be known.
8. tatra tatra grahasthityā jñeyaṃ tattatphalaṃ budhaiḥ .
tanubhāve śubhaḥ sūryo jñeyo'nyatrāśubhapradaḥ.
8. tatra tatra grahasthityā jñeyam tattatphalam budhaiḥ
| tanubhāve śubhaḥ sūryaḥ jñeyaḥ anyatra aśubhapradhaḥ
8. The wise (budhaiḥ) should know the respective results in each house by the position of planets. In the Ascendant house (tanu bhāva), the Sun (sūrya) is known to be auspicious; elsewhere, it gives inauspicious results.
9. pāpo'pi svoccarāśistho na bhavatyaśubhapradaḥ .
evaṃ śubhā'śubhaṃ dṛṣṭvā tattadbhāvaphalaṃ vadet.
9. pāpaḥ api svoccarāśisthaḥ na bhavati aśubhapradhaḥ
| evam śubhāśubham dṛṣṭvā tattadbhāvapahalam vadet
9. Even a malefic planet, when situated in its exaltation sign, does not give inauspicious results. Thus, having observed the auspicious and inauspicious factors, one should declare the results of the respective houses.
10. yo bhāvaḥ svāmisaumyābhyāṃ yukto dṛṣṭo'yamedhate .
pāpairdṛṣṭo yuto yo vā tasya hāniḥ prajāyate.
10. yaḥ bhāvaḥ svāmisaumyābhyām yuktaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ ayam edhate
| pāpaiḥ dṛṣṭaḥ yutaḥ yaḥ vā tasya hāniḥ prajāyate
10. Whichever astrological house (bhāva) is associated with or aspected by its lord and benefics, that house thrives. Conversely, whichever house is aspected by or associated with malefics, its decline occurs.
11. jñeyaṃ sagrahabhāvasya grahayogasamaṃ phalam .
agrahasya tu bhāvasya grahadṛṣṭisamaṃ phalam.
11. jñeyam sagrahabhāvasya grahayogasamaṃ phalam
| agrahasya tu bhāvasya grahadṛṣṭisamaṃ phalam
11. The result for an astrological house (bhāva) that contains planets should be understood as equivalent to the combination of those planets. However, for a house that does not contain planets, the result should be understood as equivalent to the aspects (dṛṣṭi) of planets on it.
12. śubhaireva śubhaṃ pāpairśubhaṃ miśrakhecaraiḥ .
śubhādhike śubhaṃ jñeyamaśubhaṃ tvaśubhādhike.
12. śubhaiḥ eva śubham pāpaiḥ aśubham miśrakhecaraiḥ
| śubhādhike śubham jñeyam aśubham tu aśubhādhike
12. Only auspicious results are to be expected from benefics, inauspicious results from malefics, and mixed results from a combination of planets. Auspicious results should be known when benefics are dominant, and inauspicious results when malefics are dominant.
13. evaṃ bhāveṣu kheṭānāṃ yogaṃ dṛṣṭiṃ vilokya ca .
tāratamyena vācyāni phalāni dvijasattama.
13. evam bhāveṣu kheṭānām yogam dṛṣṭim vilokya ca
| tāratamyena vācyāni phalāni dvijasattama
13. Thus, O best among the twice-born (dvija-sattama), observing the conjunctions and aspects of planets in the various houses, the results should be declared proportionally.
14. yatra naiva grahaḥ kaścinna dṛṣṭi kasyacid bhavet .
tadā tadbhāvajaṃ jñeyaṃ tatsvāmivaśataḥ phalam.
14. yatra na eva grahaḥ kaścit na dṛṣṭiḥ kasyacit bhavet
tadā tatbhāvajaṃ jñeyam tatsvāmivaśataḥ phalam
14. If there is no planet in a house (bhāva) and no planet aspects it, then the outcome (phalam) related to that house should be understood based on the influence of its lord.
15. śubho'pi śubhavargeṣu hyadhikeṣvaśubhapradaḥ .
pāpo'pi śubhavargeṣu hyadhikeṣu śubhapradaḥ.
15. śubhaḥ api śubhavargeṣu hi adhikeṣu aśubhapradaḥ
pāpaḥ api śubhavargeṣu hi adhikeṣu śubhapradaḥ
15. Even a benefic planet, though situated in an abundance of auspicious divisions (vargas), yields inauspicious results. Conversely, even a malefic planet, when in an abundance of auspicious divisions, yields auspicious results.
16. svabhoccasya śubhasyātra vargā jñeyāḥ śubhavāhāḥ .
śatroḥ krūrasya nīcasya ṣaḍvargā aśubhapradāḥ.
16. svabhoccasya śubhasya atra vargāḥ jñeyāḥ śubhavāhāḥ
śatroḥ krūrasya nīcasya ṣaḍvargāḥ aśubhapradaḥ
16. Here, the divisional strengths (vargas) of a planet in its own sign or exaltation, and those of an auspicious planet, are to be understood as bringing forth auspiciousness. Conversely, the ṣaḍvargas (six divisions) of an inimical, malefic, or debilitated planet produce inauspicious results.
17. evaṃ sarveṣu kheṭeṣu bhaveṣvapi dvijottama .
śubhāśubhatvaṃ sañcinyta tatastatphalamādiśet.
17. evaṃ sarveṣu kheṭeṣu bhaveṣu api dvijottama
śubhāśubhatvaṃ sañcintya tatas tatphalam ādiśet
17. O best among the twice-born (dvijottama)! In this manner, having thoroughly considered the auspicious and inauspicious natures in all planets and houses, one should then declare their outcomes.
18. yadā sudarśanādeva phalaṃ siddhyati dehanām .
tadā kiṃ munibhiḥ sarvairlagnādeva phalaṃ smṛtam.
18. yadā sudarśanāt eva phalam siddhyati dehinām |
tadā kim munibhiḥ sarvaiḥ lagnāt eva phalam smṛtam
18. If results for embodied beings are achieved solely from Sudarshana, then why has the result been taught by all sages to be derived solely from the ascendant (Lagna)?
19. iti ma saṃśayo jātastaṃ chettumarhati .
pṛthagbhagau yadā'rkendū lagnādanyatra saṃsthitau.
19. iti me saṃśayaḥ jātaḥ tam chettum arhati |
pṛthakbhagau yadā arka-indū lagnāt anyatra saṃsthitau
19. Thus, this doubt has arisen in me, and you ought to dispel it. When the Sun (arka) and Moon (indu) are situated separately from the ascendant (Lagna) in different houses,
20. tadā sudarśanāccakrāt phalaṃ vācyaṃ vicakṣaṇaiḥ .
ekabhe dvau trayo vā cet tadā lagnāt phalaṃ vadet.
20. tadā sudarśanāt chakrāt phalam vācyam vicakṣaṇaiḥ |
ekabhe dvau trayaḥ vā cet tadā lagnāt phalam vadet
20. Then, results should be declared by the discerning ones from the Sudarshana (chakra). However, if two or three (planets) are in one house, then one should declare results from the ascendant (Lagna).
21. atha vipra pravakṣye'haṃ prativarṣādijaṃ phalam .
asmāt sudarśanādeva daśāntaradaśāvaśāt.
21. atha vipra pravakṣye aham prativarṣādijam phalam
| asmāt sudarśanāt eva daśāntaradaśāvaśāt
21. Now, O Brahmin, I will declare the annual results (phala) originating from this very Sudarshana (chakra), specifically through the influence of the planetary periods (daśā) and sub-periods (antaradaśā).
22. tanvādyairvarṣamāssārdhadvikadhasrān pravartayet .
bhaveśādidvādaśānāṃ daśā varṣeṣu kalpayet.
22. tanu-ādyaiḥ varṣamāsa-sārdhadvikadhasrān pravartayet
| bhāva-īśa-ādi-dvādaśānām daśā varṣeṣu kalpayet
22. Starting from the ascendant (lagna) and other houses, one should calculate the two-and-a-half-day durations for the year-months. One should also determine the planetary periods (daśā) in terms of years for the twelve lords of houses, beginning with the lord of the first house.
23. tadādyantardaśāstadvanmāsādau tadbalaiḥ phalam .
taṃ taṃ bhāvaṃ prakalpyāṅkaṃ tattattanvādijaṃ dvija.
23. tad-ādi-antardaśāḥ tadvat māsa-ādau tad-balaiḥ phalam |
tam tam bhāvam prakalpya aṅkam tat-tat-tanu-ādi-jam dvija
23. O twice-born (dvija), similarly, one should calculate the sub-periods (antardaśā) starting from the main period, from the beginning of the months. The results (phalam) are determined by the strengths of those (planets). Having specifically considered each house (bhāva) and performed a calculation (aṅka), one should determine that which originates from the respective ascendant (lagna) and so on.
24. tat tallagnāt kendrakoṇāṣṭame saumyāḥ śubhapradāḥ .
yatra bhāve saiṃhikeyo bhavet tadbhāvahānikṛt.
24. tat tat-lagnāt kendra-koṇa-aṣṭame saumyāḥ śubha-pradāḥ
| yatra bhāve saiṃhikeyaḥ bhavet tad-bhāva-hāni-kṛt
24. Benefic planets (saumya), when located in the angular (kendra), trine (koṇa), or eighth houses from the respective ascendant (lagna), bestow auspicious results. Wherever Rāhu (saiṃhikeya) is present in a house (bhāva), he causes harm to that specific house.
25. pāpā vā yatra bahavastattadbhāvavināśanam .
viriṣphāriśubhaiḥ pāpaistriṣaḍāyasthitaiḥ śubham.
25. pāpāḥ vā yatra bahavaḥ tat-tat-bhāva-vināśanam |
vi-riṣpha-ari-śubhaiḥ pāpaiḥ tri-ṣaṭ-āya-sthitaiḥ śubham
25. Where many malefic planets (pāpa) are present in a house (bhāva), that house (bhāva) is ruined. Auspicious results (śubham) occur due to benefic planets (śubha) located in the 6th (ari) and 12th (vyaya) houses, and due to malefic planets (pāpa) situated in the 3rd (tri), 6th (ṣaṭ), and 11th (āya) houses.
26. evaṃ pratyabdamāsādau bhāvānāṃ phalacintanam .
dvādaśānāṃ daśā'vṛttyā daśāścāyuṣi cintayet.
26. evaṃ pratyabdam māsa-ādau bhāvānām phala-cintanam
dvādaśānām daśā-āvṛttyā daśāḥ ca āyuṣi cintayet
26. In this way, one should analyze the results related to the twelve astrological houses (bhāvas) for each year, month, and so on. One should also consider the daśās (planetary periods) throughout the lifespan, by their cyclical recurrence.
27. evaṃ sudarśanāccakrād varṣamāsādijaṃ phalam .
jñātvā tathāṣṭavargotthamubhābhyāṃ phalanirṇayaḥ.
27. evaṃ sudarśanāt cakrāt varṣa-māsa-ādi-jam phalam jñātvā
tathā aṣṭavarga-utthitam ubhābhyām phala-nirṇayaḥ
27. Thus, having ascertained the results generated from the Sudarśana Chakra concerning yearly, monthly, and other time periods, and similarly those arising from the Aṣṭakavarga system, the determination of results (phala) should be made from both approaches.
28. ubhayatra samatve hi sampūrṇaṃ tat phalaṃ vadet .
viṣamatve yadādhikyaṃ tatphalaṃ ca balakramāt.
28. ubhayatra samatve hi sampūrṇam tat phalam vadet
viṣamatve yat ādhikyam tat phalam ca balakramāt
28. Indeed, if there is equality in both (systems), one should declare that result (phala) to be complete. If there is inequality, then that result which has a preponderance, based on the order of strength, should be considered.
