1. atha ceṣṭamaniṣṭaṃ ca grahānāṃ kathayāmyaham .
yadvaśācca prayacchanti śubhā'śubhadaśāphalam.
1. atha ca iṣṭam aniṣṭam ca grahāṇām kathayāmi aham
yat vaśāt ca prayacchanti śubhāśubhadaśāphalam
1. Now I will explain the auspicious and inauspicious effects of the planets, by whose influence they grant the results of auspicious and inauspicious planetary periods (daśā).
2. svanīcono graha śodhyaḥ ṣaḍbhādhikye bhamaṇḍalāt .
saiko rāśirbhaveduccaraśmirdvighnāṃśasaṃyutaḥ.
2. svanīcounaḥ grahaḥ śodhyaḥ ṣaḍbhādhikye bhamaṇḍalāt
saikaḥ rāśiḥ bhavet uccaraśmiḥ dvighnāṃśasaṃyutaḥ
2. A planet (graha) should be subtracted from its debilitation point. If the result exceeds six signs (bhamaṇḍala), it should be subtracted from the zodiac. The sign (rāśi) thus obtained, plus one, then becomes the exaltation ray (uccaraśmi), combined with double the degrees.
3. ceṣṭākendrācca tadraśmiṃ sādhayeduccaraśmivat .
ceṣṭākendraṃ kujādīnāṃ pūrvamuktaṃ mayā dvija.
3. ceṣṭākendrāt ca tadraśmim sādhayet uccaraśmivat
ceṣṭākendram kujādīnām pūrvamuktam mayā dvija
3. From the "ceṣṭā-kendra" (motion center) one should calculate its ray in the same way as the "uccaraśmi" (exaltation ray). O twice-born (dvija), I have already explained the "ceṣṭā-kendra" for Mars (kuja) and other planets.
4. sāyanārkastribho'rkasya vyarkenduśca vidhostathā .
ceṣṭākendraṃ rasālpaṃ taccakrācchodhyaṃ rasādhike.
4. sāyanārkaḥ tribhaḥ arkasya vyarkenduḥ ca vidhoḥ tathā
ceṣṭākendram rasālpam taccakrāt śodhyam rasādhike
4. For the Sun (arka), its "ceṣṭā-kendra" (motion center) is the tropical Sun (sāyana-arka) minus three signs. Similarly, for the Moon (vidhu), it is the Moon minus the Sun. If the "ceṣṭā-kendra" is less than six signs, it should be subtracted from the zodiac; if it is more than six signs, it should also be subtracted from the zodiac.
5. ceṣṭoccaraśmiyogārdhaṃ śubharaśmiḥ prakīrtyate .
aṣṭabhyaśca viśuddho'sābaśubhākhyaśca kathyate.
5. ceṣṭoccarśmiyogārdham śubharaśmiḥ prakīrtyate
aṣṭabhyaḥ ca viśuddhaḥ asau aśubhākhyaḥ ca kathyate
5. Half of the sum of the "ceṣṭā-raśmi" (motion ray) and the "uccaraśmi" (exaltation ray) is declared to be the auspicious ray ("śubharaśmi"). And that (value) which is subtracted from eight is called the inauspicious ray ("aśubhākhyaḥ").
6. uccaceṣṭākarān vyekān digbhirhatvā tu yojayet .
tadardhamiṣṭasaṃjñaṃ syāt kaṣṭaṃ tatṣaṣṭitaścyutam.
6. ucca-ceṣṭā-karān vi-ekān digbhiḥ hatvā tu yojayet
tat-ardham iṣṭa-saṃjñam syāt kaṣṭam tat-ṣaṣṭitaḥ cyutam
6. One should multiply the factors indicating high activity (each reduced by one) by ten (the number of directions) and then add them. Half of that sum would be designated as the 'iṣṭa' (favorable) value. The 'kaṣṭa' (unfavorable) value is what remains when that 'iṣṭa' value is subtracted from sixty.
7. svocce mūlatrikoṇe ca svabhe'dhisuhṛdīṣṭabhe .
samabhe śatrubhe cādhiśatrubhe nīcabhe kramāt.
7. sva-ucce mūla-trikoṇe ca sva-bhe adhi-suhṛdi iṣṭa-bhe
sama-bhe śatru-bhe ca adhi-śatru-bhe nīca-bhe kramāt
7. In its exaltation sign, its (mūlatrikoṇa) trinal sign, its own sign, the sign of an intimate friend, the sign of a friend, a neutral sign, an enemy's sign, a great enemy's sign, and its debilitation sign – this is the sequence (of planetary strength).
8. ṣaṣṭiriṣvabdhayastriṃśadākṛtistithayo gajāḥ .
catvāro dvau ca śūnyaṃ ca śubhametatphalaṃ gṛhe.
8. ṣaṣṭiḥ iṣu-abdhayaḥ triṃśat ākṛtiḥ tithayaḥ gajāḥ
catvāraḥ dvau ca śūnyam ca śubham etat-phalam gṛhe
8. Sixty, forty-five (arrows and oceans), thirty, twenty (form), fifteen (lunar days), eight (elephants), four, two, and zero – these are the auspicious results (phalas) for a planet in a sign.
9. ṣaṣṭitaḥ patitaṃ caitaccheṣaṃ syādaśubhaṃ gṛhe .
tadardhamanyavargeṣu jñeyaṃ vipra śubhā'śubham.
9. ṣaṣṭitaḥ patitam ca etat śeṣam syāt aśubham gṛhe
tat-ardham anya-vargeṣu jñeyam vipra śubha-aśubham
9. And that which is subtracted from sixty (60 - iṣṭa) would be the inauspicious (aśubha) remainder in a sign. O Brahmin, for other divisional charts (vargas), half of the auspicious and inauspicious values should be known.
10. pañcasviṣṭaphalaṃ cādyāt samaṃ ṣaṣṭhe tataḥ param .
aśubhaṃ triṣu vijñeyamiti śāstreṣu niścitam.
10. pañcasu iṣṭa-phalam ca ādyāt samam ṣaṣṭhe tataḥ
param aśubham triṣu vijñeyam iti śāstreṣu niścitam
10. Thus, in the first five (dignities), the favorable (iṣṭa) results are applied. In the sixth (dignity), neutral results are applied. Thereafter, in the three (dignities), inauspicious results should be understood. This is conclusively established in the scriptures (śāstras).
11. digbalaṃ dikphalaṃ tasya tathā dinaphalaṃ bhavet .
tayoḥ phalaṃ śubhaṃ proktamaśubhaṃ ṣaṣṭitaścyutam.
11. digbalam dikphalam tasya tathā dinaphalam bhavet
tayoḥ phalam śubham proktam aśubham ṣaṣṭitaḥ cyutam
11. Its directional strength (digbala) yields directional results, and similarly, diurnal strength (dinabala) also produces results. The auspicious result of these two (strengths) is declared, and the inauspicious result is what remains after subtracting the auspicious part from sixty units.
12. śubhe'dhike śubhaṃ jñeyamaśubhaṃ tvaśubhe'dhike .
daśāphalaṃ nabhogasya tathā bhāvaphalaṃ dvija.
12. śubhe adhike śubham jñeyam aśubham tu aśubhe adhike
daśāphalam nabhogasya tathā bhāvaphalam dvija
12. If the auspicious (portion) is greater, the result should be understood as auspicious; but if the inauspicious (portion) is greater, it is to be known as inauspicious. O twice-born (dvija), similarly, there are the results of a planet (nabhoga) and the results of a house (bhāva).
13. balaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ samodhitvā balaikyena bhajet pṛthak .
tattadbalaphalāni syuraśubhāni śubhāni ca.
13. balaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ samodhitvā balaikyena bhajet
pṛthak tattadbalaphalāni syuḥ aśubhāni śubhāni ca
13. Having summed up the six strengths (bala), one should then divide (the individual results) separately by the sum of these strengths (bala). The resulting fruits of each strength will thus be both inauspicious and auspicious.
14. śubhapāpaphalābhyāṃ ca hanyād dṛṣṭiṃ balaṃ tathā .
dṛṣṭī te śubhapāpākhye bale syātāṃ tadāhvaye.
14. śubhapāpaphalābhyām ca hanyāt dṛṣṭim balam tathā
dṛṣṭī te śubhapāpākhye bale syātām tadāhvaye
14. One should multiply the aspect (dṛṣṭi) and the strength (bala) by the auspicious and inauspicious results. Thus, those two aspects and two strengths become known as auspicious and inauspicious, respectively.
15. bhāvānāṃ ca phale prokte patīnāṃ ca phale ubhe .
rāśau śubhanabhogaśced bhāvasādhanasaṃbhavam.
15. bhāvānām ca phale prokte patīnām ca phale ubhe
rāśau śubhanabhogaḥ cet bhāvasādhanasaṃbhavam
15. Both results for the houses (bhāva) and for their lords are declared. If an auspicious planet (nabhoga) is in a zodiacal sign (rāśi), then the achievement of the house (bhāva) becomes possible.
16. phalaṃ tasya śubhe yuñjyādaśubhe varjayet tathā .
pāpaścedanyathā caivaṃ bale dṛṣṭyāṃ tathaiva ca.
16. phalam tasya śubhe yuñjyāt aśubhe varjayet tathā
pāpaḥ cet anyathā ca evam bale dṛṣṭyām tathā eva ca
16. One should attribute a planet's results as auspicious when the planet is benefic, and similarly, one should avoid (attributing auspicious results) when it is malefic. This principle applies to a planet's strength and its aspect.
17. yuñjyāduccādige kheṭe phalaṃ nīcādige tyajet .
evaṃ śubhā'śubhaṃ jñātvā jātakasya phalaṃ vadet.
17. yuñjyāt uccādige kheṭe phalam nīcādige tyajet
evam śubhāśubham jñātvā jātakasya phalam vadet
17. One should attribute auspicious results when a planet is in exaltation (ucca) or similar strong positions, and one should disregard (auspicious results) when it is in debilitation (nīca) or similar weak positions. Thus, having understood what is auspicious and inauspicious, one should predict the native's destiny.
18. aṣṭavargaphalaṃ caivaṃ sthāne ca karaṇe'nyathā .
rāśidvayagate bhāve tadrāśyadhipateḥ kriyā.
18. aṣṭavargaphalam ca evam sthāne ca karaṇe anyathā
rāśidvayagate bhāve tad rāśyadhipateḥ kriyā
18. The results from the aṣṭavarga system are determined in this manner; however, for houses (sthāna) and calculations (karaṇa), the interpretation is different. When a house (bhāva) spans two zodiacal signs (rāśi), the influence (kriyā) is attributed to the lord of that particular sign (rāśi).
19. sthānādhikena bhāvena bhāvalābhaḥ prakīrtitaḥ .
tatsamāne ca tadbhāve tadānīṃ sthānadān grahān.
19. sthānādhikena bhāvena bhāvalābhaḥ prakīrtitaḥ
tat samāne ca tad bhāve tadānīm sthānadān grahān
19. The benefic outcome for a house (bhāva) is declared based on the sign in which the greater portion (sthāna) of the house falls. If the house is equally divided between two signs (rāśi), then one should consider the planets (graha) that bestow strength or position.
20. saṃyojye sthānasaṃkhyāyā dalametatsamaṃ phalaṃ .
evaṃ sakheṭabhāvānāṃ phalaṃ jñeyaṃ śubhā'śubham.
20. saṃyojya sthānasaṃkhyāyāḥ dalam etat samam phalam
evam sakheṭabhāvānām phalam jñeyam śubhāśubham
20. One should determine the result by combining half of the total positional strength points; this outcome is considered equivalent. In this way, the auspicious and inauspicious results of houses (bhāva) with their occupying planets (graha) should be understood.
