जन्मकालवशादेवं फलं प्रोक्तं त्वया मुने ।
यज्जन्मसमयोऽज्ञातो ज्ञेयं तस्य फलं कथम् ॥१॥

1. janmakālavaśādevaṃ phalaṃ proktaṃ tvayā mune .

O sage, you have thus stated that the results are determined by the time of birth. But if someone's birth time is unknown, how can their results be ascertained?
शुभं वाऽप्यशुभं वापि मनुजस्य पुराकृतम् ।
अस्ति कश्चिदुपायश्चेत् तं भवान् वक्तुमर्हति ॥२॥
अस्ति कश्चिदुपायश्चेत् तं भवान् वक्तुमर्हति ॥२॥
2. śubhaṃ vā'pyaśubhaṃ vāpi manujasya purākṛtam .
asti kaścidupāyaścet taṃ bhavān vaktumarhati.

If there is any method to discern a person's past actions (karma), whether good or bad, then Your Honor ought to explain it.
साधु पृष्टं त्वया विप्र लोकानुग्रहमानसा ।
कथयामि तव स्नेहात् फलमज्ञातजन्मनाम् ॥३॥

O Brāhmin, you have asked well, as your mind is intent on benefiting the world. Out of affection, I will tell you the results for those whose birth time is unknown.
वर्षायनर्तुमासार्धतिथिनक्षत्रभादिषु ।
यदज्ञातं च तन्मानं ज्ञायते प्रश्नलग्नतः ॥४॥

Whatever is unknown regarding the year, ayana (half-year), season (ṛtu), month, fortnight, lunar day (tithi), lunar mansion (nakṣatra), zodiacal part (bhā), and so forth, its measure can be ascertained from the ascendant (lagna) of the astrological query (praśna).
प्रश्नाङ्गद्वादशांशर्क्षस्थिते जन्म वदेत् गुरौ ।
अयनं लग्नपूर्वार्धे सौम्यं याम्यं परार्धके ॥५॥

When Jupiter (guru) is situated in the twelfth divisional part (dvādaśāṃśa) of the query's ascendant (lagna) sign, one should declare the birth (janma). The ayana (half-year) is Northern (saumya) if the ascendant (lagna) falls in its first half, and Southern (yāmya) if it falls in its latter half.
ऋतुर्लग्नदृकाणर्क्षस्वामिभिः शशिरादयः ।
शनिशुक्रकुजेन्दुज्ञजीवैर्ग्रीष्मस्तु भानुना ॥६॥

The season (ṛtu) is determined by the lords of the ascendant's (lagna) decanate (dṛkāṇa) and sign/nakṣatra (ṛkṣa), which include the Moon (śaśi), Rāhu, and others. Summer (grīṣma), however, is determined by the Sun (bhānu), while the other seasons are determined by Saturn (śani), Venus (śukra), Mars (kuja), Moon (indu), Mercury (jña), and Jupiter (jīva).
अयनर्तुविरोधे तु परिवर्त्याः परस्परम् ।
बुधचन्द्र सुराचार्याः कुजशुक्रशनैश्चरैः ॥७॥

However, in case of a contradiction (virodha) between the ayana (half-year) and the season (ṛtu), Mercury (budha), the Moon (candra), and Jupiter (surācārya) are to be mutually interchanged with Mars (kuja), Venus (śukra), and Saturn (śanaiścara).
मासो दृकाणपूर्वार्धेर्पूर्वोऽन्यस्तु परार्धके ।
अनुपातात् तिथिर्ज्ञेया भास्करांशसमा द्विज ॥८॥

8. māso dṛkāṇapūrvārdherpūrvo'nyastu parārdhake .

O twice-born one (dvija), the month is designated as the former (part) when it is in the first half of a drekkana, and as the other (part) when it is in the latter half. The lunar day (tithi) should be determined proportionally, corresponding to the Sun's divisional portion.
तद्वशादिष्टकालो यो जन्मकालसमो हि सः ।
तत्र ग्रहांश्च भावांश्च ज्ञात्वा तस्य फलं वदेत् ॥९॥
तत्र ग्रहांश्च भावांश्च ज्ञात्वा तस्य फलं वदेत् ॥९॥
9. tadvaśādiṣṭakālo yo janmakālasamo hi saḥ .
tatra grahāṃśca bhāvāṃśca jñātvā tasya phalaṃ vadet.

The calculated time (iṣṭakāla), which is indeed equal to the time of birth (janmakāla) based on that [previous calculation], once that is known, one should then ascertain the positions of the planets (graha) and the houses (bhāva) and declare their effects.
गुरुर्द्वादशभ्र्वर्षैः पुनस्तद्राशिगो भवेत् ।
तत् कस्मिन् पर्ययो तस्य ज्ञेयः संवत्सरो मुने ॥१०॥
तत् कस्मिन् पर्ययो तस्य ज्ञेयः संवत्सरो मुने ॥१०॥
10. gururdvādaśabhrvarṣaiḥ punastadrāśigo bhavet .
tat kasmin paryayo tasya jñeyaḥ saṃvatsaro mune.

10.
Jupiter (guru) returns to the same zodiacal sign (rāśi) after twelve years. Therefore, O sage (mune), in which revolution should its year be understood?
संवस्तरस्य सन्देहे प्रश्नकर्तुर्द्विजोत्तम ।
वयोऽनुमानतस्तत्र द्वादश द्वादश क्षिपेत् ॥११॥

11. saṃvastarasya sandehe praśnakarturdvijottama .
vayo'numānatastatra dvādaśa dvādaśa kṣipet.

saṃvatsarasya sandehe praśnakartuḥ dvijottama
vayaḥ anumānataḥ tatra dvādaśa dvādaśa kṣipet

O best among twice-born ones (dvijottama), if there is uncertainty about the questioner's year, then one should repeatedly add twelve (years) based on their estimated age.
तत्रापि संशये जाते गुरुर्लग्नत्रिकोणगः ।
कल्प्यो वयोऽनुमानेन वत्सरः पूर्ववत् ततः ॥१२॥

12. tatrāpi saṃśaye jāte gururlagnatrikoṇagaḥ .
kalpyo vayo'numānena vatsaraḥ pūrvavat tataḥ.

tatra api saṃśaye jāte guruḥ lagna-trikoṇa-gaḥ

Even if doubt arises in that matter, Jupiter, when located in a trine (5th or 9th house) from the ascendant (lagna), should be assumed to determine the year by estimation of age, as was done previously.
ज्ञात्वा मासं ससूर्यांशं कालज्ञानं कथं भवेत् ।
भगवन्निति मे ब्रूहि लोकानुग्रहचेतसा ॥१३॥

13. jñātvā māsaṃ sasūryāṃśaṃ kālajñānaṃ kathaṃ bhavet .

O venerable one (bhagavan), after ascertaining the month along with the Sun's degree, how is the precise knowledge of time (kālajñāna) determined? Please explain this to me with a mind devoted to bestowing grace upon the people.
सक्रान्तेरिष्टसूर्यांशतुल्येऽह्नि द्विजसत्तम ।
रविरौदयिकः साध्यस्तस्येष्टार्कस्य चान्तरम् ॥१४॥

14. sakrānteriṣṭasūryāṃśatulye'hni dvijasattama .
raviraudayikaḥ sādhyastasyeṣṭārkasya cāntaram.

saṅkrānteḥ iṣṭa-sūrya-aṃśa-tulye ahni dvija-sattama
raviḥ audayikaḥ sādhyaḥ tasya iṣṭa-arkasya ca antaram
raviḥ audayikaḥ sādhyaḥ tasya iṣṭa-arkasya ca antaram
14.
O best among the twice-born (dvija-sattama)! On the day that is equal to the desired solar degree from the moment of the Sun's ingress (saṅkrānti) into a new sign, the Sun's position at sunrise should be calculated, and also the difference between that (calculated) Sun and the desired Sun's position.
कलीकृत्य स्वषण्निघ्नं स्फुटार्कगतिभाजितम् ।
लब्धंघट्यादिमानं यत् तावान् सूर्योदयात् परम् ॥१५॥

15. kalīkṛtya svaṣaṇnighnaṃ sphuṭārkagatibhājitam .
labdhaṃghaṭyādimānaṃ yat tāvān sūryodayāt param.

kalī-kṛtya sva-ṣaṭ-nighnam sphuṭa-arka-gati-bhājitam
labdham ghaṭī-ādi-mānam yat tāvān sūrya-udayāt param

Having converted (the difference from the previous verse) into minutes (kalīkṛtya), and multiplied it by six, and then divided by the speed of the true Sun, the resulting value (labdham), which is a measure in units like ghaṭīs (ghaṭyādimāna), indicates that much time after sunrise.
पूर्वं जन्मेष्टकालो हि क्रमाज् ज्ञेयो विपश्चिता ।
साधितौदयिकादर्कादिष्टेऽर्केऽनिकहीनके ॥१६॥

16. pūrvaṃ janmeṣṭakālo hi kramāj jñeyo vipaścitā .

Indeed, the iṣṭakāla (time from sunrise to birth) of a past birth should be sequentially known by a wise person. This is calculated from the sun's position at its calculated rising until the sun's position at the desired moment of birth, after subtracting the 'anika' adjustment.
