1. athāhaṃ sampravakṣyāmi tavāgre dvijasattama .
bhāvahorāghaṭīsaṃjñalagnānīti pṛthak pṛthak.
1. atha aham sampravakṣyāmi tava agre dvijasattama
bhāvahorāghaṭīsaṃjñalagnāni iti pṛthak pṛthak
1. Now, O best among the twice-born (dvija), I will fully explain to you the ascendants known as Bhāva, Horā, and Ghaṭī, each distinctly.
2. sūryodayaṃ samārabhya ghaṭikānāṃ tu paṃcakam .
prayāti janmaparyantaṃ bhāvalagnaṃ tadeva hi.
2. sūryodayam samārabhy ghaṭikānām tu pañcakam
prayāti janmaparyantam bhāvalagnam tat eva hi
2. Starting from sunrise, a duration counted in units of five ghaṭīs (ghaṭika) proceeds up to the time of birth. That very principle is indeed the Bhāva-lagna.
3. iṣṭaṃ ghaṭyādikaṃ bhaktvā paṃcabhirbhādijaṃ phalam .
yojyamaudayike sūrye bhāvalagnaṃ sphuṭaṃ ca tat.
3. iṣṭaghaṭyādikam bhaktvā pañcabhiḥ bhādijam phalam
yojyam audayike sūrye bhāvalagnam sphuṭam ca tat
3. Divide the specified time (from sunrise to birth), in ghaṭīs (ghaṭika) and other units, by five. The resulting value (in signs and degrees) should then be added to the Sun's position at sunrise. That, indeed, is the precise Bhāva-lagna.
4. tathā sārdhadvighaṭikāmitādarkodayād dvija .
prayāti lagnaṃ tannāma horālagnaṃ pracakṣate.
4. tathā sārdhadvighaṭikāmita arkodayāt dvija
prayāti lagnam tat nāma horālagnam pracakṣate
4. Similarly, O twice-born (dvija), starting from sunrise, an ascendant proceeds, measured by two and a half ghaṭīs (ghaṭika). They call that ascendant, by name, the Horā-lagna.
5. iṣṭaghaṭyādikaṃ dvighnaṃ pañcāptaṃ bhādikaṃ ca yat .
yojyamaudayike bhānau horālagnaṃ sphuṭaṃ hi tat.
5. iṣṭaghaṭyādikam dvighnam pañcāptam bhādikam ca yat
yojyam audayike bhānau horālagnam sphuṭam hi tat
5. The specified time (from sunrise to birth) in ghaṭīs (ghaṭika) and so on, multiplied by two and then divided by five, which (result) is expressed in signs and other units, should be added to the Sun's position at sunrise. That, indeed, is the precise Horā-lagna.
6. kathayāmi ghaṭīlagnaṃ sṛnu tvaṃ dvijasattama .
sūryodayat samārabhya janmakālāvadhi kramāt.
6. kathayāmi ghaṭīlagnaṃ sṛṇu tvaṃ dvijasattama
sūryodayāt samārabhya janmakālāvavdhi kramāt
6. O best among brahmins (dvija), listen! I will explain the Ghaṭī-Lagna, which is calculated sequentially from sunrise up to the time of birth.
7. ekaikaghaṭikāmānāt lagnaṃ yadyāti bhādikam .
tadeva ghaṭikālagnaṃ kathitaṃ nāradādibhiḥ.
7. ekaika ghaṭikāmānāt lagnaṃ yadi yāti bhādikam
tat eva ghaṭikālagnaṃ kathitaṃ nāradādibhiḥ
7. If the ascendant progresses through the zodiacal signs (rāśi) by the measure of each Ghaṭī, then that alone is declared to be the Ghaṭī-Lagna by Nārada and others.
8. rāśayastu ghaṭītulyāḥ palārdhapramitāṃśakāḥ .
yojyamaudayike bhanau ghaṭīlagnaṃ sphuṭaṃ hi tat.
8. rāśayaḥ tu ghaṭītulyāḥ palārdhapramitāṃśakāḥ
yojyam audayike bhānau ghaṭīlagnaṃ sphuṭaṃ hi tat
8. The zodiacal signs (rāśi) are equivalent to a Ghaṭī (24 minutes), with their divisions (aṃśaka) measured by half a pala (12 seconds). This calculation should be applied to the rising Sun (bhānu), and that indeed will give the precise Ghaṭī-Lagna.
9. kramādeṣāṃ ca lagnānāṃ bhāvakoṣṭhaṃ pṛthak likhet .
ye grahā yatra bhe tatra te sthāpyā rāśilagnavat.
9. kramāt eṣām ca lagnānām bhāvakoṣṭhaṃ pṛthak likhet
ye grahā yatra bhe tatra te sthāpyā rāśilagnavat
9. One should separately draw the house charts (bhāva-koṣṭha) for these sequential Lagnas. Whichever planets are in which sign (bhā), they should be placed there, just as they are positioned in the Rāśi-Lagna chart.
10. varṇadākhyadaśāṃ bhānāṃ kathayāmyatha te'grataḥ .
yasya vijñānamātreṇa vadedāyurbhavaṃ phalam.
10. varṇadākhyadaśāṃ bhānām kathayāmi atha te agrataḥ
yasya vijñānamātreṇa vadet āyurbhavaṃ phalam
10. Now, I shall explain to you the Varṇadā daśā (planetary period) of the zodiacal signs (bhā). Merely by understanding this, one can declare the results pertaining to life (āyus) and existence (bhāva).
11. ojalagnaprasūtānāṃ meṣādergaṇayet kramāt .
samalagnaprasūtānām mīnāderapasavyataḥ.
11. ojalagnaprasūtānām meṣādeḥ gaṇayet kramāt
samalagnaprasūtānām mīnādeḥ apasavyataḥ
11. For those born with an odd ascending sign (lagna), one should count in direct order starting from Aries. For those born with an even ascending sign, one should count in reverse order starting from Pisces.
12. meṣamīnādito janmalagnāntaṃ gaṇayet sudhīḥ .
tathaiva horālagnāntaṃ gaṇayitvā tataḥ param.
12. meṣamīnāditaḥ janmalagnāntam gaṇayet sudhīḥ
tathaiva horālagnāntam gaṇayitvā tataḥ param
12. An intelligent person should count from Aries or Pisces (as determined by the previous rule) up to the birth ascendant (lagna). Similarly, having counted up to the Horā-lagna, thereafter (the process continues).
13. ojatvena samatvena sayātīye ubhe yadi .
tarhi saṃkhye yojayīta vaijātye tu viyojayet.
13. ojatvena samatvena sajātīye ubhe yadi tarhi
saṅkhye yojayīta vaijātye tu viyojayet
13. If both (the counts derived for the birth ascendant and Horā-lagna) are of the same nature, meaning both are derived from odd signs or both from even signs, then one should add the two numbers. However, if they are of different natures (one from an odd sign, one from an even), one should subtract them.
14. meṣamīnāditaḥ paścādyo rāśiḥ sa tu varṇadaḥ .
etatprayojanaṃ vakṣye sṛṇu tvaṃ dvijapuṃgavaḥ .
horālagnabhayorneyā sabalādvarṇadā daśā.
14. meṣamīnāditaḥ paścāt yaḥ rāśiḥ saḥ
tu varṇadaḥ etat prayojanam vakṣye
śṛṇu tvam dvijapuṅgavaḥ
horālagnabhayoḥ neyā sabalāt varṇadā daśā
14. The sign determined by counting (from Aries or Pisces as per the rules in 137896-137898) is the one that assigns the specific varṇa (letter/category). I shall now explain the purpose of this; please listen, O best among the twice-born (dvija). The varṇa-giving planetary period (dasha) should be derived from whichever is stronger between the Horā-lagna and the birth ascendant (lagna).
15. yatsaṃkhye varṇado lagnāt tattatsaṃkhyākrameṇa tu .
kramayutkramabhedena daśā syādojayugmayo.
15. yat saṅkhye varṇadaḥ lagnāt tat tat saṅkhyā krameṇa
tu kramayutkramabhedena daśā syāt ojayugmayoḥ
15. The planetary period (dasha) that determines the varṇa (category) is derived from the number corresponding to the stronger of the two relevant ascendants (lagna or Horā-lagna). This derivation follows the sequence of that number, distinguishing between direct and reverse counting for odd and even signs respectively.
16. pāpadṛṣṭiḥ pāpayogo varṇdasya trikoṇake .
yadi syāt tarhi tadrāśiparyantaṃ tasya jīvanaṃ.
16. pāpadṛṣṭiḥ pāpayogaḥ varṇadasya trikoṇake yadi
syāt tarhi tadrāśiparyantam tasya jīvanam
16. If there is a malefic aspect or a malefic conjunction in the trines (5th or 9th houses) from the varṇada (indicator of vitality), then that person's life extends only up to the period of that particular sign.
17. rudraśūle yathaivāyurmaraṇādi nirūpyate .
tathaiva varṇadasyapi trikoṇe pāpasaṃgame.
17. rudraśūle yathā eva āyuḥ maraṇa-ādi nirūpyate
tathā eva varṇadasya api trikoṇe pāpasaṅgame
17. Just as longevity and the timing of death (maraṇādi) are determined using the Rudra Śūla system, similarly, one should consider the effect on the varṇada if there is a malefic conjunction in its trine houses.
18. varṇadādapi bho vipra lagnavaccintayet phalam .
varṇadāt saptamād bhāvat kalatrāyurvicintayet.
18. varṇadāt api bho vipra lagnavat cintayet phalam
varṇadāt saptamāt bhāvāt kalatrāyuḥ vicintayet
18. O Brahmin, one should consider the effects (phal) from the varṇada just as one would from the Lagna (ascendant). From the seventh house (bhāva) from the varṇada, one should consider the longevity (āyuḥ) of the spouse.
19. ekādaśādagrajasya tṛtīyāttu yavīyasaḥ .
sutasya paṃcame vidyānmātuścaturthabhāvat.
19. ekādaśāt agrajasya tṛtīyāt tu yavīyasaḥ
sutasya pañcame vidyāt mātuḥ caturthabhāvāt
19. One should understand the longevity of the elder sibling from the eleventh house, and for the younger sibling from the third house. For the son, it is known from the fifth house, and for the mother, from the fourth house.
20. pituśca navamād bhāvādayurīvaṃ vicintayet .
śūlarāśidaśāyāṃ vai pravalāyāmariṣṭakam.
20. pituḥ ca navamāt bhāvāt āyuḥ evam vicintayet
śūlarāśidaśāyām vai pravalāyām ariṣṭakam
20. And for the father, one should similarly consider longevity from the ninth house. Indeed, calamity (ariṣṭa) manifests significantly during the predominant period (daśā) of the śūlarāśi.
21. evaṃ tanvādibhāvānāṃ kartavyā varṇā daśā .
pūrvavacca phalaṃ jñeyaṃ dehināṃ ca śubhāśubham.
21. evam tanvādibhāvānām kartavyā varṇā daśā
pūrvavat ca phalam jñeyam dehinām ca śubhāśubham
21. In this manner, the Varna daśās should be applied to the houses (bhāvas) starting from the first. And just as before, the auspicious and inauspicious results for embodied beings should be understood.
22. grahanāṃ varṇadā naiva rāśīnāṃ varṇdā daśā .
kṛtvārkadhā rāśidaśāṃ kramādantardaśāṃ vadet.
22. grahānām varṇadā na eva rāśīnām varṇadā daśā
kṛtvā arkadhā rāśidaśām kramāt antardaśām vadet
22. The Varna daśā is not associated with planets (grahas), but rather with the signs (rāśis). Having calculated the Rāśi daśā in twelve ways, one should then declare the antardaśā (sub-period) in their proper sequence.
23. evamantardaśādiṃ ca kṛtvā tena phalaṃ vadet .
kramavyutkramabhedena likhedantardaśāmapi.
23. evam antardaśā ādim ca kṛtvā tena phalam vadet
kramavyutkramabhedena likhet antardaśām api
23. Thus, having calculated the antardaśā (sub-periods) and so on, one should declare the results accordingly. One should also delineate the antardaśā (sub-periods) by distinguishing between direct and reverse sequences.
24. svasvadeśodbhavaṃ lagnaṃ janmalagnamimihocyate .
bhāvahorādilagnānāṃ sarvatraiva samakriyā.
24. svasvadeśa udbhavam lagnam janmalagnam iti iha
ucyate bhāvahorā ādi lagnānām sarvatra eva samakriyā
24. The ascendant (lagna) determined according to one's own country or region is here referred to as the natal ascendant (janma lagna). For the ascendants of the houses (bhāvas), horās, and so on, the rules of operation are the same everywhere.
