तिथिनक्षत्रलग्नानां गण्डान्तं त्रिविधं स्मृतम् ।
जन्मयात्राविवाहादौ भवेत्तन्निधनप्रदम् ॥१॥

1. The critical junction (gaṇḍānta) of the lunar day (tithi), constellation (nakṣatra), and ascendant (lagna) is considered to be of three types. At the time of birth, journey, marriage, or similar events, it can prove to be fatal.
पूर्णानन्दाख्ययोस्तिथ्योः सन्धौ नाडीचतुष्टयम् ।
अध ऊर्ध्वं च मैत्रेय तिथिगण्डान्तमुच्यते ॥२॥
2. pūrṇānandākhyayostithyoḥ sandhau nāḍīcatuṣṭayam .
adha ūrdhvaṃ ca maitreya tithigaṇḍāntamucyate.

2. O Maitreya, the period of four nāḍīs (96 minutes) - two nāḍīs (48 minutes) preceding and two nāḍīs (48 minutes) succeeding - at the junction of the Pūrṇā and Nandā lunar days (tithi) is called tithi-gaṇḍānta.
रेवतीदास्रयोः साप्रमघयोः शाक्रमूलयोः ।
सन्धौ नक्षत्रगण्डान्तमेवं नाडीचतुष्टयम् ॥३॥
3. revatīdāsrayoḥ sāpramaghayoḥ śākramūlayoḥ .

3. Similarly, the period of four nāḍīs (96 minutes) - two nāḍīs preceding and two nāḍīs succeeding - at the junction of Revatī and Aśvinī (Dāśra) nakṣatras, Āśleṣā (Sārpa) and Maghā nakṣatras, and Jyeṣṭhā (Śakra) and Mūla nakṣatras, is called nakṣatra-gaṇḍānta.
मीनाजयोः कर्किहर्योर्लग्नयोरलिचापयोः ।
सन्धौ च लग्नगण्डान्तमधऊर्ध्व घटीमितम् ॥४॥
4. mīnājayoḥ karkiharyorlagnayoralicāpayoḥ .

4. At the junction of the ascendant (lagna) signs Mina and Aja (Pisces and Aries), Karki and Hari (Cancer and Leo), and Ali and Cāpa (Scorpio and Sagittarius), the lagna-gaṇḍānta is a period measured by one ghaṭī (24 minutes) - specifically, half a ghaṭī (12 minutes) preceding and half a ghaṭī (12 minutes) succeeding the junction.
एषु चाभुक्तमूलाख्यं महाविघ्नपदं स्मृतम् ।
इन्द्रराक्षसयोः सन्धौ पञ्चाष्टघटिकाः क्रमात् ॥५॥
5. eṣu cābhuktamūlākhyaṃ mahāvighnapadaṃ smṛtam .

5. Among these periods, that which is called "abhuktamūla" is regarded as a major source of impediments. At the conjunction point of the Indra (Jyeṣṭhā) and Rakṣasa (Mūla) constellations, it consists of five and eight "ghaṭikās" respectively.
अथ गण्डान्तजातस्य शिशोः शान्तिविधिं ब्रुवे ।
गण्डान्तकालजातस्य सूतकान्त्यदिने पिता ॥६॥
6. atha gaṇḍāntajātasya śiśoḥ śāntividhiṃ bruve .

6. Now, I will explain the ritual (śāntividhi) for appeasing the ill effects for a child born in the Gaṇḍānta period. The father should perform this ritual for the child born during the Gaṇḍānta period on the last day of the postnatal impurity (sūtaka).
शान्तिंशुभेऽह्नि वा कुर्यात् पश्येत् तावन्न तं शिशुम् ।
वृषभं तिथिगण्डान्ते नक्षत्रे धनुमेव च ॥७॥
7. śāntiṃśubhe'hni vā kuryāt paśyet tāvanna taṃ śiśum .
vṛṣabhaṃ tithigaṇḍānte nakṣatre dhanumeva ca.

7. The father should perform the appeasement ritual (śānti) either on the last day of postnatal impurity (sūtaka) or on an auspicious day. Until that ritual is performed, he should not see that child. For a birth in the "tithigaṇḍānta" (lunar day junction), a bull is offered, and for a birth in the "nakṣatragaṇḍānta" (constellation junction), indeed a bow (is offered).
काञ्चनं लग्नगण्डान्ते दद्यात्तद्दोषप्रशान्तये ।
आद्यभागे प्रजातस्य पितुश्चाप्यभिषेचनम् ॥८॥
8. kāñcanaṃ lagnagaṇḍānte dadyāttaddoṣapraśāntaye .
ādyabhāge prajātasya pituścāpyabhiṣecanam.

ādyabhāge prajātasya pituḥ ca api abhiṣecanam
8. One should donate gold at the end of the "lagna-gaṇḍānta" (the transitional period between a zodiac sign and a lunar mansion) for the pacification of its associated faults. Furthermore, if a child is born during the first part of this period, a purificatory bath should be performed for both the child and the father.
द्वितीये तु शिशोर्मातुरभिषेकं च कारयेत् ।
सुवर्णेन तदर्धेण यथावित्तं द्विजोत्तम ।
तिथिभेषादिरूपं च कृत्वा वस्त्रसमन्वितम् ॥९॥
9. dvitīye tu śiśormāturabhiṣekaṃ ca kārayet .
suvarṇena tadardheṇa yathāvittaṃ dvijottama .
tithibheṣādirūpaṃ ca kṛtvā vastrasamanvitam.

9. However, if the child is born in the second part (of the "lagna-gaṇḍānta"), a purificatory bath should be performed for both the child and the mother. This ritual should be carried out with gold, or half its value, according to one's financial capacity, O best among the twice-born (dvija). Additionally, one should perform rituals related to the lunar day (tithi) and stellar mansion (nakshatra) as appropriate, accompanied by appropriate clothing (or offerings of clothing).
उपचारैर्यथाशक्ति कलहोपरि पूजयेत् ।
पूजान्ते समिदन्नज्यैर्होम।
कुर्याद्यथाविधि ॥१०॥

10. One should offer worship with appropriate services, according to one's capacity (śakti), for the cessation of discord (kalaha). At the conclusion of this worship (pūjā), a fire ritual (homa) should be performed according to prescribed rules, using sacred firewood (samidh), cooked food (anna), and clarified butter (ājya).
ब्राह्मणान् भोजयेत् पश्चादेवं दोषात्प्रमुच्यते ।
आयुरारोग्यमैश्वर्यं सम्प्राप्नोति दिने दिने ॥११॥
11. brāhmaṇān bhojayet paścādevaṃ doṣātpramucyate .
āyurārogyamaiśvaryaṃ samprāpnoti dine dine.

āyuḥ ārogyam aiśvaryam samprāpnoti dine dine
11. Afterwards, one should feed Brahmins. In this way, one is freed from defects. One attains longevity, health, and prosperity day by day.
