अथ विप्र प्रवक्ष्यामि योगं प्रव्रज्यकाभिधम् ।
प्रव्रजन्ति जना येन सम्प्रदायान्तरं गृहात् ॥१॥
1. atha vipra pravakṣyāmi yogaṃ pravrajyakābhidham .

1. Now, O Brahmin, I will explain the planetary combination (yoga) called 'Pravrajyaka,' by which people renounce their homes and enter another tradition.
चतुरादिभिरेकस्थैः प्रव्रज्या बलिभिः समाः ।
रव्यादिभिस्तपस्वी च कपाली रक्तवस्त्रभृत् ॥२॥
2. caturādibhirekasthaiḥ pravrajyā balibhiḥ samāḥ .
ravyādibhistapasvī ca kapālī raktavastrabhṛt.

2. If four or more powerful planets are situated in a single sign, they cause renunciation (pravrajyā). When the Sun (among them) is the strongest, the person becomes an ascetic (tapasvī), a Kapalika, and wears red garments.
एकदण्डी यतिश्चक्रधरो निर्ग्रन्थिकः क्रमात् ।
ज्ञेया वीर्याधिकस्यैव सबलेषु बहुष्वपि ॥३॥
3. ekadaṇḍī yatiścakradharo nirgranthikaḥ kramāt .
jñeyā vīryādhikasyaiva sabaleṣu bahuṣvapi.

3. An Ekadaṇḍī (single-staff bearer), a Yati (ascetic), a Cakradhara (discus-bearer), and a Nirgranthika (one without ties) are the types of renunciates to be known in sequence. Such a determination is made based on the strongest planet, even among many powerful ones.
सूर्येणाऽस्तं गतास्ते चेदपि वीर्यसमन्विताः ।
अदीक्षितास्तदा ज्ञेया जनास्तद्गतभक्तयः ॥४॥
4. sūryeṇā'staṃ gatāste cedapi vīryasamanvitāḥ .
adīkṣitāstadā jñeyā janāstadgatabhaktayaḥ.
4. sūryeṇa astam gatāḥ te cet api vīryasamannvitāḥ
adīkṣitāḥ tadā jñeyāḥ janāḥ tadgatabhaktayaḥ
4. If planets, even when endowed with strength, become combust by the Sun, then individuals influenced by them should be understood as uninitiated, their devotion (bhakti) directed towards that (the Sun).
अस्तंगता निर्बलाश्चेत् सबलश्च रविर्यदा ।
तदा रविभवा ज्ञेया प्रव्रज्या द्विजसत्तम ॥५॥
5. astaṃgatā nirbalāścet sabalaśca raviryadā .
tadā ravibhavā jñeyā pravrajyā dvijasattama.

tadā ravibhavā jñeyā pravrajyā dvijasattama
5. O best of the twice-born (dvija), if planets are combust and weak, and at the same time the Sun is strong, then renunciation (pravrajyā) originating from the Sun should be understood.
जन्मभेशोऽन्यखेटैश्चेददृष्टः शनिमीक्षते ।
तयोर्बलवशात्तत्र प्रव्रज्यामाप्नुयान्नरः ॥६॥
6. janmabheśo'nyakheṭaiścedadṛṣṭaḥ śanimīkṣate .
tayorbalavaśāttatra pravrajyāmāpnuyānnaraḥ.
6. janmabheśaḥ anyakheṭaiḥ cet adṛṣṭaḥ śanim īkṣate
tayoḥ balavaśāt tatra pravrajyām āpnuyāt naraḥ
6. If the lord of the natal star (or birth ascendant) aspects Saturn, while not being aspected by any other planets, then a person will attain renunciation (pravrajyā) due to the strength of both of them (the natal lord and Saturn).
निर्बलो जन्मभेशश्चेत् केवलेनार्किणेक्षितः ।
तदा शनिभवमेव प्रव्रज्यां आप्नुयाज्जनः ॥७॥
7. nirbalo janmabheśaścet kevalenārkiṇekṣitaḥ .
tadā śanibhavameva pravrajyāṃ āpnuyājjanaḥ.
7. nirbalaḥ janmabheśaḥ cet kevalena arkiṇā īkṣitaḥ
tadā śanibhavam eva pravrajyām āpnuyāt janaḥ
7. If the lord of the natal star (or birth ascendant) is weak and aspected only by Saturn, then a person will attain renunciation (pravrajyā) that originates solely from Saturn.
शनिदृक्काणसंस्थे च शनिभौमनवांशके ।
शनिदृष्टे विधौ ज्ञेया प्रव्रज्या शनिसम्भवा ॥८॥
8. śanidṛkkāṇasaṃsthe ca śanibhaumanavāṃśake .
śanidṛṣṭe vidhau jñeyā pravrajyā śanisambhavā.

8. If the Moon is located in a "dṛkkāṇa" (decante) of Saturn, and simultaneously in a "navāṃśa" (ninth division) ruled by either Saturn or Mars, and is also aspected by Saturn, then a renunciation (pravrajyā) caused by Saturn should be inferred.
कुजादिषु जयी शुक्रः सौम्यगो याम्यगोऽपि वा ।
जयी सौम्यगतश्चान्यः परस्परयुतौ भवेत् ॥९॥
9. kujādiṣu jayī śukraḥ saumyago yāmyago'pi vā .
jayī saumyagataścānyaḥ parasparayutau bhavet.
9. kujādiṣu jayī śukraḥ saumyagaḥ yāmyagaḥ api vā
jayī saumyagataḥ ca anyaḥ parasparayutau bhavet
9. Among Mars and other planets, Venus is victorious whether it is moving in the northern course (Uttarāyaṇa) or even in the southern course (Dakṣiṇāyana). Another planet, if it is in its northern course, also becomes victorious when they are in mutual connection (conjunction or aspect).
प्रव्रज्याकारकः खेटो यद्यन्येन पराजितः ।
तदा लब्धां परिव्रज्यां परित्यजति तां पुनः ॥१०॥
10. pravrajyākārakaḥ kheṭo yadyanyena parājitaḥ .
tadā labdhāṃ parivrajyāṃ parityajati tāṃ punaḥ.
10. pravrajyākārakaḥ kheṭaḥ yadi anyena parājitaḥ
tadā labdhām parivrajyām parityajati tām punaḥ
10. If the planet signifying renunciation (pravrajyā) is defeated by another planet, then one abandons that previously acquired state of renunciation (pravrajyā) again.
बहवो जन्मकाले चेत् प्रव्रज्याकारका ग्रहाः ।
बलतुल्यास्तदा तत्र प्रव्रज्या कतमा भवेत् ॥११॥
11. bahavo janmakāle cet pravrajyākārakā grahāḥ .
balatulyāstadā tatra pravrajyā katamā bhavet.

balatulyāḥ tadā tatra pravrajyā katamā bhavet
11. If, at the time of birth, there are many planets signifying renunciation (pravrajyā) and they are all of equal strength, then what kind of renunciation (pravrajyā) would one experience?
बहवो बलिनश्चेत् स्युः प्रव्रज्याकारका ग्रहाः ।
तदा प्राप्नोति सर्वेषां तेषां प्रव्रज्यकां ध्रुवम् ॥१२॥
12. bahavo balinaścet syuḥ pravrajyākārakā grahāḥ .
tadā prāpnoti sarveṣāṃ teṣāṃ pravrajyakāṃ dhruvam.
12. bahavaḥ balinaḥ cet syuḥ pravrajyākārakāḥ grahāḥ
tadā prāpnoti sarveṣām teṣām pravrajyakām dhruvam
12. If there are many powerful planets that are indicators of renunciation (pravrajyā), then a person certainly attains the renunciation associated with all of them.
तत्तद्ग्रहदशाकाले प्रव्रज्यां याति तद्भवाम् ।
त्यक्त्वा गृहीतपूर्वां तामन्यां प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१३॥
13. tattadgrahadaśākāle pravrajyāṃ yāti tadbhavām .
tyaktvā gṛhītapūrvāṃ tāmanyāṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ.
13. tattadgrahadaśākāle pravrajyām yāti tat-bhavām
tyaktvā gṛhītapūrvām tām anyām prāpnoti mānavaḥ
13. During the operating period (daśā) of each such planet, a person attains the renunciation (pravrajyā) originating from it. Having abandoned the previously adopted renunciation, that human being (mānava) then takes up another.
दृष्टेष्विन्द्विज्यलग्नेषु शनिना नवमे गुरुः ।
राजयोगेऽत्र जातोऽसौ तीर्थिकृन्नऽत्र संशयः ॥१४॥
14. dṛṣṭeṣvindvijyalagneṣu śaninā navame guruḥ .
rājayoge'tra jāto'sau tīrthikṛnna'tra saṃśayaḥ.
14. dṛṣṭeṣu induijyalagneṣu śaninā navame guruḥ
rājayoge atra jātaḥ asau tīrthikṛt na atra saṃśayaḥ
14. When the Moon (indu), Jupiter (ijya), and the Ascendant (lagna) are aspected by Saturn (śani), and Jupiter is situated in the ninth house, a person born under this prominent planetary combination (rājayoga) certainly becomes an ascetic (tīrthikṛt); there is no doubt about it.
धर्मस्थानगते मन्दे ग्रहदृष्टिविवर्जिते ।
राजयोगेऽत्र यो जातः स राजा दीक्षितो भवेत् ॥१५॥
15. dharmasthānagate mande grahadṛṣṭivivarjite .
rājayoge'tra yo jātaḥ sa rājā dīkṣito bhavet.

rājayoge atra yaḥ jātaḥ saḥ rājā dīkṣitaḥ bhavet
15. When Saturn (manda) is situated in the house of natural law (dharma-sthāna, i.e., the ninth house) and is devoid of any planetary aspects, then a person born under this specific planetary combination (rājayoga) becomes a king (rājā) who is initiated (dīkṣita) [into a spiritual path, implying an ascetic king].
