महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-5, chapter-70, verse-66

अथ वा मूलघातेन द्विषतां मधुसूदन ।
फलनिर्वृत्तिरिद्धा स्यात्तन्नृशंसतरं भवेत् ॥६६॥
66. atha vā mūlaghātena dviṣatāṁ madhusūdana ,
phalanirvṛttiriddhā syāttannṛśaṁsataraṁ bhavet.

phalanivṛttiḥ ṛddhā syāt tat nṛśaṃsataram bhavet
66. Or else, O Madhusūdana, by completely destroying the enemies, the desired outcome might be abundantly achieved. However, that would be more cruel.
