महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-5, chapter-70, verse-57

हत्वाप्यनुशयो नित्यं परानपि जनार्दन ।
अनुबन्धश्च पापोऽत्र शेषश्चाप्यवशिष्यते ॥५७॥
57. hatvāpyanuśayo nityaṁ parānapi janārdana ,
anubandhaśca pāpo'tra śeṣaścāpyavaśiṣyate.
57. hatvā api anuśayaḥ nityam parān api janārdana
anubandhaḥ ca pāpaḥ atra śeṣaḥ ca api avaśiṣyate
57. Even after killing, O Janārdana, there is always regret (anuśaya), even concerning enemies. Furthermore, a sinful consequence (anubandha) remains here, and a remnant (śeṣa) also persists.
