महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-5, chapter-70, verse-56

ये ह्येव वीरा ह्रीमन्त आर्याः करुणवेदिनः ।
त एव युद्धे हन्यन्ते यवीयान्मुच्यते जनः ॥५६॥
56. ye hyeva vīrā hrīmanta āryāḥ karuṇavedinaḥ ,
ta eva yuddhe hanyante yavīyānmucyate janaḥ.

56. Indeed, those very heroes who are modest, noble, and compassionate—they alone are killed in battle, while the younger (or less capable) people are spared.
