महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-8, chapter-30, verse-73

ब्राह्मं पाञ्चालाः कौरवेयाः स्वधर्मः सत्यं मत्स्याः शूरसेनाश्च यज्ञः ।
प्राच्या दासा वृषला दाक्षिणात्याः स्तेना बाह्लीकाः संकरा वै सुराष्ट्राः ॥७३॥
73. brāhmaṁ pāñcālāḥ kauraveyāḥ svadharmaḥ; satyaṁ matsyāḥ śūrasenāśca yajñaḥ ,

73. The Pañcālas and Kauraveyas embody `brāhmam` (Brāhmic knowledge/qualities) as their intrinsic nature (svadharma), while the Matsyas and Śūrasenas uphold truth (satyam) and Vedic ritual (yajña). The Easterners (Prācyas) are `dāsas` (servants) and `vṛṣalas` (śūdras); the Southerners (Dākṣiṇātyas) are thieves; the Bāhlīkas are of mixed origin (saṅkarāḥ), and the Surāṣṭras are indeed also of mixed origin.
