मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-15, verse-29

कार्पासिके हृते क्रौञ्चो वाल्कहर्ता बकस्तथा ।
मयूरो वर्णकान् हृत्वा शाकपत्रं च जायते ॥२९॥
29. kārpāsike hṛte krauñco vālkahartā bakastathā .
mayūro varṇakān hṛtvā śākapatraṃ ca jāyate.
29. kārpāsike hṛte krauñcaḥ vālkahartā bakaḥ tathā
mayūraḥ varṇakān hṛtvā śākapatraṃ ca jāyate
29. When a cotton garment (kārpāsika) is stolen, one becomes a curlew (krauñca). The thief of bark-cloth (vālka) becomes a crane (baka). Similarly, having stolen pigments (varṇaka), one becomes a peacock (mayūra); and [having stolen] vegetable leaves (śākapatra), one is reborn.
