O best among the twice-born (dvijasattama)! When the Sun (sūrya), Mars (maṅgala), and Saturn (śanaiścara) are in the ascendant (lagna), half (ardha) of their own (sva) life-span (āyus) should be reduced (pātayed). If (they are) aspected (saṃdṛṣṭa) by a benefic (śubha), [the reduction is modified].
