Planets (graha) contribute their shares successively (kramād) as full, half, one-third, one-fourth, one-fifth, and one-sixth portions. If a malefic planet (pāpa) is situated (sthita) in the house preceding (vāmaṃ) the twelfth house (vyayād), it completely takes away (haret) [its assigned share]. A benefic planet (saumya) also takes away (haret) half (dala) of that [malefic's destructive effect].
