मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-113, verse-12

तं दृष्ट्वा चिन्तयामास किमेतदिति भैरवम् ।
पातालविवरं मन्ये नैतद्मूमेश्चिरन्तनम् ॥१२॥
12. taṃ dṛṣṭvā cintayāmāsa kimetaditi bhairavam .
pātālavivaraṃ manye naitadmūmeścirantanam.
12. tam dṛṣṭvā cintayāmāsa kim etat iti bhairavam
pātālavivaram manye na etat bhūmeḥ cirantanam
12. Upon seeing that, he pondered, 'What is this dreadful sight? I believe this is an opening to the netherworld (pātāla), and not merely an ancient feature of the earth.'
