महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-3, chapter-190, verse-43

अथ कस्यचित्कालस्य तस्यां कुमारास्त्रयस्तस्य राज्ञः संबभूवुः शलो दलो बलश्चेति ।
ततस्तेषां ज्येष्ठं शलं समये पिता राज्येऽभिषिच्य तपसि धृतात्मा वनं जगाम ॥४३॥
43. atha kasyacitkālasya tasyāṁ kumārāstrayastasya rājñaḥ saṁbabhūvuḥ śalo dalo balaśceti ,
tatasteṣāṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ śalaṁ samaye pitā rājye'bhiṣicya tapasi dhṛtātmā vanaṁ jagāma.
43. atha kasyacit kālasya tasyām kumārāḥ trayaḥ
tasya rājñaḥ sambabhūvuḥ śalaḥ dalaḥ balaḥ ca
iti | tataḥ teṣām jyeṣṭham śalam samaye pitā
rājye abhiṣicya tapasi dhṛta-ātmā vanam jagāma
43. Then, after some time, three princes named Shala, Dala, and Bala were born to that king from her. Thereafter, their father, at the appropriate time, consecrated the eldest, Shala, to the kingship. With his mind fixed on spiritual austerity (tapas), he departed for the forest.
