मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-61, verse-66

ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
अष्टावात्मगुणा ये हि तेषामादौ दया द्विज ।
तां करोषि कथं न त्वं मयि सद्धर्मपालक ॥६६॥
66. brāhmaṇa uvāca .
aṣṭāvātmaguṇā ye hi teṣāmādau dayā dvija .
tāṃ karoṣi kathaṃ na tvaṃ mayi saddharmapālaka.
66. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca aṣṭau ātmaguṇāḥ ye hi teṣām ādau dayā
dvija tām karoṣi katham na tvam mayi saddharmapālaka
66. The Brahmin said: "O twice-born one (dvija), among the eight qualities of the self (ātman), compassion is indeed the foremost. How is it, O protector of true natural law (dharma), that you do not show that compassion towards me?"
