aṣṭāvātmaguṇā ye hi teṣāmādau dayā dvija .
tāṃ karoṣi kathaṃ na tvaṃ mayi saddharmapālaka.

The Brahmin said: "O twice-born one (dvija), among the eight qualities of the self (ātman), compassion is indeed the foremost. How is it, O protector of true natural law (dharma), that you do not show that compassion towards me?"
