महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-116, verse-51

अस्वर्ग्यमयशस्यं च रक्षोवद्भरतर्षभ ।
विधिना हि नराः पूर्वं मांसं राजन्नभक्षयन् ॥५१॥
51. asvargyamayaśasyaṁ ca rakṣovadbharatarṣabha ,
vidhinā hi narāḥ pūrvaṁ māṁsaṁ rājannabhakṣayan.

vidhinā hi narāḥ pūrvam māṃsam rājan abhakṣayan
51. bharatarṣabha rājan asvargyam ayaśasyam ca

51. O best of Bharatas, O King, (eating meat) is not conducive to heaven, brings no renown, and is like (the practice of) demons. Nevertheless, in ancient times, people did indeed consume meat according to the prescribed rules.
