महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-116, verse-29

यदि चेत्खादको न स्यान्न तदा घातको भवेत् ।
घातकः खादकार्थाय तं घातयति वै नरः ॥२९॥

29. yadi cetkhādako na syānna tadā ghātako bhavet ,

29. If there were no consumer, then there would be no killer. Indeed, a person kills (an animal) for the sake of the consumer.
