महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-123, verse-37

तथैव हृष्टवदनस्तथैवादीनमानसः ।
छित्त्वाविचार्य तं प्रादाद्द्रोणायाङ्गुष्ठमात्मनः ॥३७॥
37. tathaiva hṛṣṭavadanastathaivādīnamānasaḥ ,
chittvāvicārya taṁ prādāddroṇāyāṅguṣṭhamātmanaḥ.
37. tathā eva hṛṣṭavadanaḥ tathā eva adīnamānasaḥ
chittvā avicārya tam prādāt droṇāya aṅguṣṭham ātmanaḥ
37. With a joyful face and an undaunted spirit, having cut it, he gave his own thumb (ātman) to Drona without a second thought.
