My father (Bhishma), the one of great vow (mahāvrataḥ), who was irresistibly fierce in battle (yuddhadurmadaḥ), was formerly sought (kāṅkṣitaḥ) for assistance (sāhāyye) by the gods (vibudhaiḥ), including Indra (sendraiḥ), as they struck down the demons (dānavān ghnadbhiḥ).
