The Self (ātman), which is pure consciousness (saṃvid), by its very nature of consciousness (cittva), perceives the body as mere space within space. Even after death (mṛtvā), it continues to perceive that which existed (santam) as if it were still existing (santam iva), just as one perceives things in mental creation (saṃkalpa) and dreams.
