योगवासिष्ठः       yogavāsiṣṭhaḥ - book-6, chapter-25, verse-9

अपानेऽस्तंगते प्राणो यावन्नाभ्युदितो हृदि ।
तावत्सा कुम्भकावस्था योगिभिर्यानुभूयते ॥ ९ ॥
apāne'staṃgate prāṇo yāvannābhyudito hṛdi ,
tāvatsā kumbhakāvasthā yogibhiryānubhūyate 9
9. apāne astaṅgate prāṇaḥ yāvat na abhyuditaḥ hṛdi
tāvat sā kumbhakāvasthā yogibhiḥ yā anubhūyate
9. apāne astaṅgate,
yāvat prāṇaḥ hṛdi na abhyuditaḥ,
tāvat sā yā yogibhiḥ anubhūyate kumbhakāvasthā
9. As long as the apāna (downward-moving vital air) has subsided and the prāṇa (inward-moving vital air) has not yet arisen in the heart, that is the state of breath retention (kumbhaka) which is experienced by practitioners of yoga (yogins).
