मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-58, verse-4

मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
प्राङ्मुखो भगवान् देवः कूर्मरूपी व्यवस्थितः ।
आक्रम्य भारतं वर्षं नवभेदमिदं द्विज ॥४॥
4. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
prāṅmukho bhagavān devaḥ kūrmarūpī vyavasthitaḥ .
ākramya bhārataṃ varṣaṃ navabhedamidaṃ dvija.
4. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca prāṅmukhaḥ bhagavān devaḥ kūrmarūpī
vyavasthitaḥ ākramya bhāratam varṣam navabhedam idam dvija
4. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "O twice-born (dvija), the revered divine Lord (deva), in the form of a tortoise, is situated facing east, pervading this Bhārata (India) region, which has nine divisions."
