महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-271, verse-9

नैष दानवता शक्यस्तपसा नैव चेज्यया ।
संप्राप्तुमिन्द्रियाणां तु संयमेनैव शक्यते ॥९॥
9. naiṣa dānavatā śakyastapasā naiva cejyayā ,
saṁprāptumindriyāṇāṁ tu saṁyamenaiva śakyate.
9. na eṣaḥ dānavatā śakyaḥ tapasā na eva ca ijyayā
samprāptum indriyāṇāṃ tu saṃyamena eva śakyate
9. eṣaḥ dānavatā na śakyaḥ tapasā ca eva ijyayā na

9. He cannot be attained through demonic nature, nor by asceticism (tapas), nor even by Vedic ritual (yajña). But He can be attained only through the restraint of the senses.
