The rākṣasa did not know the inner nature or vulnerability of Hanumān, nor did Hanumān, the son of Marut, know that of the great-souled (mahātman) rākṣasa. Having confronted each other, those two, whose valor was equal to that of the gods, became unbearable to one another.
