योगवासिष्ठः       yogavāsiṣṭhaḥ - book-3, chapter-96, verse-40

जडाजडदृशोर्मध्ये दोलारूपं स्वकल्पनम् ।
यच्चितो म्लानरूपिण्यास्तदेतन्मन उच्यते ॥ ४० ॥
jaḍājaḍadṛśormadhye dolārūpaṃ svakalpanam ,
yaccito mlānarūpiṇyāstadetanmana ucyate 40
40. jaḍājaḍadṛśoḥ madhye dolārūpam svakalpanam
yat citaḥ mlānarūpiṇyāḥ tat etat manaḥ ucyate
40. etat manaḥ ucyate yat jaḍājaḍadṛśoḥ madhye
dolārūpam svakalpanam citaḥ mlānarūpiṇyāḥ tat
40. That which is a self-conception, oscillating between the inert and the conscious (cit) perspectives, and which is a dimmed form of consciousness (cit) itself – this is called the mind (manas).
