महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-8, chapter-57, verse-36

स्वप्स्ये वा निहतस्ताभ्यामसत्यो हि रणे जयः ।
कृतार्थो वा भविष्यामि हत्वा तावथ वा हतः ॥३६॥
36. svapsye vā nihatastābhyāmasatyo hi raṇe jayaḥ ,
kṛtārtho vā bhaviṣyāmi hatvā tāvatha vā hataḥ.
36. svapsye vā nihataḥ tābhyām asatyaḥ hi raṇe jayaḥ
kṛtārthaḥ vā bhaviṣyāmi hatvā tau atha vā hataḥ
36. vā tābhyām nihataḥ svapsye hi raṇe asatyaḥ jayaḥ
vā tau hatvā atha vā hataḥ kṛtārthaḥ bhaviṣyāmi
36. Alternatively, I will die, slain by them; for indeed, victory (achieved by retreating) is meaningless in battle. Or, having slain those two, or having been slain myself, I will achieve my purpose.
