महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-6, chapter-79, verse-9

आत्मदोषात्समुत्पन्नं शोचितुं नार्हसे नृप ।
न हि रक्षन्ति राजानः सर्वार्थान्नापि जीवितम् ॥९॥
9. ātmadoṣātsamutpannaṁ śocituṁ nārhase nṛpa ,
na hi rakṣanti rājānaḥ sarvārthānnāpi jīvitam.
9. ātma-doṣāt samutpannam śocitum na arhase nṛpa na
hi rakṣanti rājānaḥ sarvārthān na api jīvitam
9. nṛpa ātma-doṣāt samutpannam śocitum na arhase
hi rājānaḥ sarvārthān api jīvitam na rakṣanti
9. O king, you should not grieve over this situation, which has arisen from your own fault (ātman). For indeed, kings cannot protect all their possessions, nor even their own lives.
