महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-96, verse-8

आहूय दानं कन्यानां गुणवद्भ्यः स्मृतं बुधैः ।
अलंकृत्य यथाशक्ति प्रदाय च धनान्यपि ॥८॥
8. āhūya dānaṁ kanyānāṁ guṇavadbhyaḥ smṛtaṁ budhaiḥ ,
alaṁkṛtya yathāśakti pradāya ca dhanānyapi.
8. āhūya dānaṃ kanyānāṃ guṇavadbhyaḥ smṛtaṃ budhaiḥ
alaṃkṛtya yathāśakti pradāya ca dhanāni api
8. The wise declare that the gift of maidens to men of good qualities is (to be made) after inviting (the grooms), adorning (the maidens) according to one's capacity, and also giving wealth.
