Bhīma, desiring the death of Bhīṣma, fought Saumadatti, the great charioteer. Likewise, Saumadatti, eager for Bhīṣma's victory, fought the Pāṇḍava (Bhīma). Both of them, intent on mutual retaliation, engaged in battle.
