महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-70, verse-49

वेदव्रती स्याद्वृषभप्रदाता वेदावाप्तिर्गोयुगस्य प्रदाने ।
तीर्थावाप्तिर्गोप्रयुक्तप्रदाने पापोत्सर्गः कपिलायाः प्रदाने ॥४९॥

49. One who donates a bull (vṛṣabha) becomes an observer of Vedic vows. The attainment of Vedic knowledge is gained by giving a pair of cows. The attainment of pilgrimage sites (tīrtha) is gained by giving anything related to cows. The abandonment of sin is achieved by giving a tawny cow (kapilā).
