महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-323, verse-32

नित्याञ्जलिकृतान्ब्रह्म जपतः प्रागुदङ्मुखान् ।
मानसो नाम स जपो जप्यते तैर्महात्मभिः ।
तेनैकाग्रमनस्त्वेन प्रीतो भवति वै हरिः ॥३२॥

mānaso nāma sa japo japyate tairmahātmabhiḥ ,

32. They were always with clasped hands (añjali), chanting the supreme reality (brahman), and facing the northeast. This practice is known as 'mental chanting' (mānaso japa) and is performed by those great souls (mahātman). Indeed, through such focused concentration of mind, Lord Hari becomes pleased.
