महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-315, verse-35

प्राणिनां सर्वतो वायुश्चेष्टा वर्तयते पृथक् ।
प्राणनाच्चैव भूतानां प्राण इत्यभिधीयते ॥३५॥

35. prāṇināṁ sarvato vāyuśceṣṭā vartayate pṛthak ,
prāṇanāccaiva bhūtānāṁ prāṇa ityabhidhīyate.

35. The vital air (vāyu) maintains the distinct activities of all living beings. And it is called prana (prāṇa) because it animates creatures.
