महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-187, verse-43

आश्रयो नास्ति सत्त्वस्य क्षेत्रज्ञस्य च कश्चन ।
सत्त्वं मनः संसृजति न गुणान्वै कदाचन ॥४३॥
43. āśrayo nāsti sattvasya kṣetrajñasya ca kaścana ,
sattvaṁ manaḥ saṁsṛjati na guṇānvai kadācana.

43. There is no support (āśraya) whatsoever for the mind-stuff (sattva) or for the knower of the field (kṣetrajña). The mind-stuff (sattva) creates the mind (manas), but it certainly never creates the fundamental qualities (guṇas) themselves.
