महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-187, verse-27

इन्द्रियाणि च सर्वाणि विजेतव्यानि धीमता ।
सत्त्वं रजस्तमश्चैव प्राणिनां संश्रिताः सदा ॥२७॥
27. indriyāṇi ca sarvāṇi vijetavyāni dhīmatā ,
sattvaṁ rajastamaścaiva prāṇināṁ saṁśritāḥ sadā.

27. And all the senses must be conquered by a discerning person. Indeed, the qualities of goodness (sattva), activity (rajas), and inertia (tamas) are always inherent in living beings.
