महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-7, chapter-48, verse-50

महाभया वैतरणीव दुस्तरा प्रवर्तिता योधवरैस्तदा नदी ।
उवाह मध्येन रणाजिरं भृशं भयावहा जीवमृतप्रवाहिनी ॥५०॥
50. mahābhayā vaitaraṇīva dustarā; pravartitā yodhavaraistadā nadī ,
uvāha madhyena raṇājiraṁ bhṛśaṁ; bhayāvahā jīvamṛtapravāhinī.
50. mahā-bhayā vaitaraṇī iva dustarā
pravartitā yodha-varaiḥ tadā nadī
uvāha madhyena raṇa-ajiram
bhṛśam bhayā-vahā jīva-mṛta-pravāhinī
50. tadā yodha-varaiḥ pravartitā

50. Then, a greatly terrifying river, difficult to cross like the Vaitaraṇī, was set in motion by the best warriors. It flowed intensely through the middle of the battlefield, terrifying and carrying a current of living and dead beings.
