17. tato me punarevāsītsaṁjñā saṁcintya śāstrataḥ ,

17.
Then again, by pondering the scriptures (śāstra), understanding came to me, (thinking,) 'O Lord, this method of (receiving with) the hand is not enjoined in the Vedas.' (Rather,) 'The ancestral offering (pinda) should be given by a person here.' This thought then occurred to me.
