महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-58, verse-18

न च विक्रीणते ब्रह्म ब्राह्मणाः स्म तदा नृप ।
न च शूद्रसमाभ्याशे वेदानुच्चारयन्त्युत ॥१८॥
18. na ca vikrīṇate brahma brāhmaṇāḥ sma tadā nṛpa ,
na ca śūdrasamābhyāśe vedānuccārayantyuta.
18. na ca vikrīṇate brahma brāhmaṇāḥ sma tadā nṛpa
na ca śūdrasamābhyāśe vedān uccārayanti uta
18. And, O king, brahmins at that time did not sell the sacred knowledge (Veda), nor did they recite the Vedas in the proximity of a śūdra.
