महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-14, chapter-46, verse-6

मेखला च भवेन्मौञ्जी जटी नित्योदकस्तथा ।
यज्ञोपवीती स्वाध्यायी अलुप्तनियतव्रतः ॥६॥
6. mekhalā ca bhavenmauñjī jaṭī nityodakastathā ,
yajñopavītī svādhyāyī aluptaniyatavrataḥ.

yajñopavītī svādhyāyī a-lupta-niyata-vrataḥ

6. And his girdle should be made of muñja grass; he should wear matted hair, always possess water (for purity), similarly wear the sacred thread, be devoted to self-study (svādhyāya), and strictly adhere to his prescribed vows.
