महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-6, verse-22

कृतः पुरुषकारस्तु दैवमेवानुवर्तते ।
न दैवमकृते किंचित्कस्यचिद्दातुमर्हति ॥२२॥

22. When human effort (puruṣakāra) is performed, destiny (daiva) indeed follows. For destiny is not able to give anything to anyone if effort is not made.
