महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-44, verse-53

पाणिग्रहणमन्त्राणां निष्ठा स्यात्सप्तमे पदे ।
पाणिग्राहस्य भार्या स्याद्यस्य चाद्भिः प्रदीयते ॥५३॥

pāṇigrāhasya bhāryā syādyasya cādbhiḥ pradīyate.

53. The fulfillment of the chants (mantra) of the marriage (pāṇigrahaṇa) ceremony occurs at the seventh step. She becomes the wife of the one who takes her hand, and to whom she is given with water.
