महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-44, verse-30

भीष्म उवाच ।
न वै निष्ठाकरं शुल्कं ज्ञात्वासीत्तेन नाहृतम् ।
न हि शुल्कपराः सन्तः कन्यां ददति कर्हिचित् ॥३०॥
30. bhīṣma uvāca ,
na vai niṣṭhākaraṁ śulkaṁ jñātvāsīttena nāhṛtam ,
na hi śulkaparāḥ santaḥ kanyāṁ dadati karhicit.
30. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca na vai niṣṭhākaram śulkam jñātvā āsīt tena
na āhṛtam na hi śulkaparāḥ santaḥ kanyām dadati karhicit

30. Bhishma spoke: 'Indeed, he did not accept any payment that would have made the arrangement permanent. This is because people who are solely intent on receiving such payments never truly give away their daughter.'
