महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-44, verse-34

तस्मादा ग्रहणात्पाणेर्याचयन्ति परस्परम् ।
कन्यावरः पुरा दत्तो मरुद्भिरिति नः श्रुतम् ॥३४॥
34. tasmādā grahaṇātpāṇeryācayanti parasparam ,
kanyāvaraḥ purā datto marudbhiriti naḥ śrutam.
34. tasmāt ā grahaṇāt pāṇeḥ yācayanti parasparam
kanyā varaḥ purā dattaḥ marudbhiḥ iti naḥ śrutam
34. tasmāt pāṇeḥ grahaṇāt ā parasparam yācayanti.
naḥ śrutam iti kanyā varaḥ purā marudbhiḥ dattaḥ.
34. Therefore, from the act of taking the hand (in marriage), they (bride and groom) entreat each other. Indeed, it has been heard by us that the maiden was formerly given to the groom by the Maruts.
