महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-15, verse-3

धर्मं संरक्षते दण्डस्तथैवार्थं नराधिप ।
कामं संरक्षते दण्डस्त्रिवर्गो दण्ड उच्यते ॥३॥

3. O king, the rod of justice (daṇḍa) protects righteousness (dharma); similarly, it protects prosperity (artha) and pleasure (kāma). Indeed, the entire triad of human pursuits (trivarga) is said to be daṇḍa itself.
