महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-72, verse-44

कान्तारे ब्राह्मणान्गाश्च यः परित्राति कौशिक ।
क्षेमेण च विमुच्येत तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु ।
अश्वमेधक्रतोस्तुल्यं फलं भवति शाश्वतम् ॥४४॥

44. kāntāre brāhmaṇāngāśca yaḥ paritrāti kauśika ,
kṣemeṇa ca vimucyeta tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu ,
aśvamedhakratostulyaṁ phalaṁ bhavati śāśvatam.

44. O Kauśika, listen to the meritorious reward (phala) of one who protects brahmins and cows in a wilderness, and is safely released (vimukta). The eternal reward he obtains is equal to that of an aśvamedha Vedic ritual.
