महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-72, verse-34

संग्रामेष्वर्जयित्वा तु यो वै गाः संप्रयच्छति ।
आत्मविक्रयतुल्यास्ताः शाश्वता विद्धि कौशिक ॥३४॥
34. saṁgrāmeṣvarjayitvā tu yo vai gāḥ saṁprayacchati ,
ātmavikrayatulyāstāḥ śāśvatā viddhi kauśika.

ātma-vikraya-tulyāḥ tāḥ śāśvatāḥ viddhi kauśika
34. kauśika yaḥ tu vai saṃgrāmeṣu arjayitvā gāḥ
samprayacchati tāḥ ātma-vikraya-tulyāḥ śāśvatāḥ viddhi
34. O Kauśika, know that those cows which one indeed donates after having acquired them in battles are considered equivalent to one's own self-offering (ātman-vikraya), and their rewards are eternal.
