Sages (muni), with concentrated minds, self-controlled, and devoted to self-restraint, considered this to be the ultimate good, this to be the Absolute (brahman), and this to be the unsurpassed benefit. Having contemplated the worlds (loka) with their minds, they then composed the scriptures (śāstra).
